Fairness.com LLC is a public interest organization based in Charlottesville, Virginia. We've been working on web applications since 2000, but not as a business; a group of volunteers and I have operated the Fairness.com site since 2000 as a noncommercial, apolitical, agenda-free information clearinghouse site cataloging:
My focus shifted a few years ago to trying to improve some of the fundamental "cultural infrastructure" that makes it far too easy for the powerful to take advantage of the less powerful. NowComment®, now a general purpose application, was originally envisioned as a "civil society" citizen engagement tool to facilitate in-depth, intellectually honest discussion of complex documents.
[ If you think NowComment looks interesting please fan us on Facebook, tell your friends and colleagues, etc. etc. ]
A prototype version of NowComment powered our 2008 Electiondocs.com site (now offline), which made all the speeches and position papers from the Obama and McCain presidential campaigns available for public comment and discussion. Unfortunately we finished the software only a few weeks before the election, so it didn't get much attention, but we learned a lot about doing online discussion. We think we're on track to really get it right.
