This chart shows the overall uses of medical research on animals, and the various recorded reasons for the procedures.
Since 1986, the number of normal procedures has drastically declined, and procedures on genetically modified animals has dramatically increased.
The number of harmful genetic mutations has heightened since 1986.
It seems from the chart that animal experiments have been going on since 1939, but only “procedures” began in 1986.
The number peaked at around 5.5 million animal experiments.
This data is from the United Kingdom.
“The US only counts mammals (although mice and rats are not included). This provides an official figure of 820,812 animals (not procedures, as in the UK). Unofficial estimates that include mice, rats and non-mammal vertebrates suggest 12-27 million animals.”
