Amna Rana: Cognitive Dissonance theory
Share your observation
This chapter focuses on role of theory in applied social psychology. Pick one theory and read research based on that theory. We will discuss whatever you post.
Firstly, in this chapter we learnt why theories have three major role in applied social psychology: (1) they help make sense of social behavior (understand) Knowledge Deficit Model: social programs (like public transportation) are underutilized because individuals lack knowledge about the programs or the behavior ,(2) they guide and inform the development of interventions intended to address a social problem (solve) and
(3) they can be tested for practicality and usefulness in the real world (evaluate)
Three role of theory is 1) understand 2) solution 3) evaluation
Rational choice theory: Essentially, this theory maintains that individuals are motivated to act in ways that
promote their self-interests. IN the book example is about travelling on the bus and driving by the car I cannot understand this?
In order to use this join a conversation. You can start a conversation as well. I want to know more can be a topic. So you can pose your questions , what you want answers for and also share your readings. Paste few lines that you have read but do.not understand. So we can help each other
See the task and follow my comments .
For example Ayesha car break down on the freeway…. If she believes that the breakdown happened because her car is old , she is making an external attribution theory.
Add new cognitions to bolster one of the dissonant elements: ‘I don’t really have a choice, since the train is so inefficient. Now if the train were to run more frequently, I would certainly use it. How does it relate to cognitive dissonance theory
When everyone does not put in their full amount of effort because they are part of a group, this can lead to reduced productivity.
For exampleTug of war, group homework projects, and an entertainer asking an audience to scream are all examples of social loafing because as you add more people to a group, the total group effort declines.
Tug of War is the perfect example because it’s where Maximillian Ringelmann originally found it
According to three dimensions of Attribution theory, people try to determine why we do, what we do.
Stability(Stable and unstable)
Locus of control(Internal and external)
Controllability(controllable or uncontrollable)
Forexample; a student who fail in exam could contribute their to a number of factors and it’s attribution that will affect their motivation in future.
So anyone explain above example in three dimensions of attribution theory?
Social loafing occurs when an individual is doing less when working in a group, as opposed to putting forth full effort if they were alone
there are alot of exmaple we see in our daily life
for example teacher makes group to make presentation but all students did not participate well they think one or two person can do so we have more example Tug of War is the perfect exampl of social loafing
another example could be when in an office employees are asked to work in groups but one individual feels that he is the only one working in the group and others are not. this means other members slack off and all the burden is on the one working in group.
What is rational choice theory in international relations?
The reason behind choosing this topic is that flirting or harassment is common phenomenon in our society. As we are boys and we have noticed or heard someone passing comments on a girl around. So, in this, we’ll discuss that why some boys do that and why the others don’t.
Group members:
Zain Ali
Umer Shabbir
Ubaid ur Rehman
Topic: “Why do some boys flirt or harass the girls?”
After choosing this topic, we have decided to have the opinion of people through physical and online surveys. Our main focus will be to find core reason behind the fact “Why some of them do this and the others don’t?”
