This type of checklist will be extremely helpful for the SWD and ELL students in my classroom. In fact, all students will benefit from this type of support.

The "I can" statements help the students to take more ownership over what they are doing and the goals we are asking them to meet.

I like this idea of giving student-friendly checklists to help students keep track of their own learning. It is also helpful for those who need a tool to hold themselves accountable, like easily distracted students who can check off each box.

I would like to hear from some colleagues about how to record the students’ success in each area on paper.
I thought this was an interesting discussion, I hadn’t really seen the process one explicitly stated like this before. I was relieved to find that we are already doing some of it, even though we maybe didn’t realize it!

We need to slow down in order to do this work and sometimes, that feels like a challenge! Checking in with students at different points along the way helps us to emphasize the value of the learning process and all that happens along the way.

I agree! It is important to have multiple modes of assessment for our students. Just as students have varying learning styles, students can show learning in varying ways.

This was very helpful in showing what types of assessments correlate with a standard I teach at least once a week. It reminds me of the Bilingual CC Progressions (on EngageNY) that do this based on proficiency level.

It can be hard for students at this level to conceive of appropriate ways to show their learning, and we have standards that help us as teachers decide what the product or project will be, but having them cocreate learning targets helps them think about the thinking they will need to do to reach the end goal and gives them ownership of that.
