The Process: The Breakdown of Writing Lyrics

Music is something everyone has a connection to no matter what part of the world a person may be in. People become connected to the lyrics of songs if they can relate to them. Artist like Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, and even Taylor Swift all have lyrics that relates to their audience and they use personal experience to make their listens feel a strong connection with them. Writing lyrics is a very strategic process. It comes with years of practicing and having the right ear for music. When writing music, the artist has to make sure it relates to the audience, have a poetic melody, and has to be personal in some type of way in order to gain the ultimate response.

Lyrics are one of the main pieces of art when it comes to creating a masterful product of music. The words have to mean something to listeners in order to gain an audience that is completely loyal. Once people have a sense of connectivity to an artist, they will go above and beyond for that artist. Most popular rappers really make an impact by talking about their past life and how things were before they were this famous being. When the audience hears these types of things it gives them a sense of hope no matter what their situation could be. Seeing a person that was once in a bad predicament make it a the point of success that looks unattainable, it creates inspiration. Relativity is one of the most important aspects in creating song lyrics. It separates the good writers from the great writers.

Once the production for a song is complete, which is the instrumentation that brings life into the song, the artist has to find the proper niche of melody for the song. This is how choruses to songs are created. Most artist make a humming noise in order to figure out which way they want the song to sound. The melody is what keeps the audience replaying the song over and over again because it gets stuck in their heads. Determining the melody to a song comes from the type of production that song has. It also helps with the topic of your song. Some songs that are made are very catchy but they don't have any substance within them. The artist could possibly have a big hit but without that connectivity to the audience, they become what the industry calls a “one hit wonder”. Being a very successful artist, they have to make sure that the connectivity is still there when creating these catching anthems. It allows for more people to feel the song more than just hear the song. Music brings outs more emotions that people realize because it creates multiples feelings, good, bad, or sad. When I create music I try to make sure everything is unique and different in order to make sure that I stand out amongst the competition out there. Hip-Hop artist Fetty Wap gained major success because he had a melody that was never heard before and people related to his singing because it wasn't the greatest but everybody was capable of singing along.

Being personal when writing music is one of the ultimate separations with artist today. When artist talk about real life situations, it keeps that connectivity to the audience alive and puts the feelings of the music on another level. Real life situations and putting personal experiences into the music allows the artist to put themselves up for humility and that gets respected by the listeners and the industry. When putting personal experience into the lyrics, the audience maybe be able to relate to anything the artist may say. It could be the simplest things but someone can find a way to relate to it. Artist like Drake have been known to put the most personal experiences into his albums. His fan base became very large because of this way of writing. People feel as if they know him in more ways than none. From my own experience, when I became more personal with my songwriting, I felt as if those songs were the best I have written during my beginning six years of writing. I felt more confident about what I created because everything released on to the paper smoothly and I didn’t second guess myself like I would use to. I didn’t think about impressing people with my words, I just knew that the words were my story and people would either like them or they wouldn’t. I noticed that more people listened to my music more than before after this change in writing. Being able to put personal things on display for the world to see and hear is a talent within itself. Doing that creates a high level of respect for artist. Audiences grativity to the sense of honesty. The most successful artist are the ones that talk about their lives more than anything and the reason for that is because many people relate to that than the artist who talk about random things.

The process of songwriting is a process that comes with repetition. An artist has to be fearless when writing music because the type of things that allows artist to be successful are some that are tough for just anybody. Being able to have lyrics relate to the audience, creating a powerful melody with substance, and putting personal experiences into the music creates the ultimate success of a songwriter. Anybody can create a song but creating a song successful comes with pure determination and a sense of love for what the product can become with putting more into than most would.
