WASHINGTON, D.C. — Being able to soar right over other cars in a traffic jam might seem like a dream. But soon it could be a reality.
Companies have tried to make flying cars for a long time. They have never been able to do it. That may be changing. Many companies around the world are developing flying cars.
One idea is a car with wings that unfold to fly. Another is like a helicopter with a battery-powered motor.
Flying Cars Without Drivers
Some of the flying cars would not have a driver. They would be programmed before each trip. They would also be monitored by a person on the ground. Other flying cars would have pilots inside.
Cities are becoming more crowded. This means more people are on the roads. It can take a long time to get somewhere when the roads are crowded.
Flying cars could be an answer. They could take their passengers to the rooftops of office buildings during rush hours. Then people would not have to be stuck in traffic.
Companies Still Have Work To Do
It's still unclear how much flying cars will cost. Companies hope to keep prices low. If more people want them, the cost will be lower.
Companies still have work to do. They need to make longer-lasting batteries so the flying cars can stay in the air longer. They will also have to prove that flying cars are safe. They will need to make the flying cars quieter. Also, buildings will need places for them to land.
Some companies think building the flying car is the easier part. The harder part is making sure it can be used where people want to use it.
