Finding a place to belong means everything. It's so hard to connect with people who haven't been where you are.

Being able to share your feelings with other people that understand is so important. If you can’t share than eventually those thoughts and feelings will start to eat you up inside. I’ve been there too.
Whitney Langston(Dec 05 2017 8:05AM):
I think its amazing that she is being an activist to help stop suicide in the transgender community. Someone needs to be the voice for those who do not have one and it helps a lot that she is actually part of the transgender community herself.
Aurora Cullerton(Dec 02 2017 1:46PM):
I really wish it was easier for people who are transgender. When Emmy talks about the shame and guilt here I just feel so bad. It shouldn't be that society makes someone feel they should be someone they aren't.
more
Truly their identity doesn’t affect you any more than maybe the pronouns they use. It isn’t fair for family, friends, coworkers, or strangers to tell someone they shouldn’t be allowed to be themselves and that they should feel guilty. These people aren’t hurting you, so why are you hurting them and trying to control their lives’. It is their body, their choice, their identity not societies or anyone else’s and they should be celebrated like everyone else.
Long Live Jazz(Dec 09 2017 9:51PM):
Before I clicked play on this video I had an open mind of what exactly this individual would say about this movement. Already, I am amazed that she was part of a music video since it is not common to see LGBTQ people accepted in such ways.

Kiana Moon(Dec 05 2017 10:46PM):
I feel as though advocating for suicide in the media is a great thing to do. The media is a place that everyone is exposed to and that is a great place to have something that could change their life.
Leo Norling(Nov 30 2017 2:04PM):
I appreciate that Emmy makes clear what the video is about, and how it will help other Trans identified people. It shows some sexualized images that I wasn't expecting, but overall has a good start and really spoke to me.
more
I first off connect with this video, identifying as transgender. I have also experienced certain mental health related issues due to identifying as such. Therefore, this video I think will resonate with me personally.
Whitney Langston(Dec 05 2017 8:07AM):
Its so sad that this actually happens to people everyday. They feel so alone in the world that they need drugs or alcohol to numb the pain and make themselves feel better. We need to come together as a community and accept those who are different.
Long Live Jazz(Dec 09 2017 9:53PM):
I do not believe people believe how important it is to realize the different ways people decide to deal with hate. Drinking, drugs and self-hate are so common when someone feels as though they do not belong. It is not right but it is reality.

Kiana Moon(Dec 05 2017 10:47PM):
Its sad hearing about someone who has tried to kill themselves multiple times. This shows that we do not have enough resources or outlets out there that people could trust to save a life.
[Edited]moreTags:

Knowing of people personally who have killed themselves always brings up the question “what can we do to help/stop people from wanting to leave this earth?”
Aurora Cullerton(Dec 02 2017 1:50PM):
I am so happy that Emmy found her family through that program. Her dreams are meaningful and it takes a lot of strength when you grown up feeling alone like she did to go out and fight for those dreams. I hope this video can help other transgender people.
Jennifer Tyler(Dec 06 2017 10:06AM):
It's so important to follow you heart. I love that she had the strength to attain her dream after being suicidal.

This is significant because it kept her alive! I have been in a place more than once where I thought about taking my life. My passions gave me the strength to keep going.
Leo Norling(Nov 30 2017 2:07PM):
I think her advice is nice. It isn't personally the most helpful to me. However, the fact that she was still able to follow her dreams and become an actress --speaking for the trans community -- definitely was something important to show case.

I think her giving advice and showing where she has come from, and where she is going is extremely important. It demonstrated that yes, she has had her struggles, but she is able to bounce back and obtain her dreams. It gives me hope, and I think would give others hope as well; that it does get better.
Long Live Jazz(Dec 09 2017 9:55PM):
When he said he was gay my mouth DROPPED. As I am still trying to get used to not "judging a book by its cover" I literally was not expecting that. A policeman that does not meet society's "standards" as a gay man can seem surprising. But I love it!!!!
[Edited]
Aurora Cullerton(Dec 02 2017 1:54PM):
Its so frustrating to hear about people who are told they can't fight for their nation because they are LGBT. Why should something like that matter. Discharging soldiers for this reason is so superficial and really only hurts the military as a whole.
Whitney Langston(Dec 05 2017 8:08AM):
I think the it is so incredible that this man decided to join the Air Force knowing his friends have gotten kicked out for being gay. We need more people like this to be doing those kinds of jobs and services.
Kiana Moon(Dec 05 2017 10:49PM):
Its a shame that law enforcement literally have been fired just from being gay. It shouldn't be against policy to be who you are.
Leo Norling(Nov 30 2017 2:10PM):
So far, Lt. James speaks about being in law enforcement while identifying as a gay man. It was a time before Don't Ask, Don't Tell, and a time that was less accepting.
more
I think his vulnerability during this section is extremely powerful. It illustrates this more “macho man” occupation and this “macho man” exterior of the Lieutenant can still be scared and coming out was an experience that conflicted with his job and self.
Jennifer Tyler(Dec 06 2017 10:13AM):
Someone else that followed his dream and was successful! This is inspiring for others that are gay and not sure where they belong.
more
This is significant because if you can succeed at the thing that you want most than you can certainly succeed at coming out and being loved. It connects with many stories that I’ve read about people coming out and being accepted.
Aurora Cullerton(Dec 02 2017 1:58PM):
The fact that this man was such a great officer that he was recognized and put on the promotion list is amazing and only makes him feeling outcast for being himself so upsetting. Personal life has nothing to do with work and being gay is personal!
Whitney Langston(Dec 05 2017 8:11AM):
It is so sad that this man who is doing an amazing service not only in our community but for our country felt like he needed to leave a job her loved because there might be the chase he could be fired for who he is!!! What kind of a world do we live in?
Kiana Moon(Dec 05 2017 10:55PM):
It is good to hear that he decided to find a place to work where he can be himself.

Normally a lot of people tend to hide who they are to keep the job they need. A lot of people do not have the courage to leave a find a place where they are happier because the job pays their bills.
Jennifer Tyler(Dec 06 2017 10:17AM):
Following your instincts is important for any situation. How wonderful that he found a place to belong through that process.

Following your instincts is always significant. There have been many times in my life when I did follow them and was rewarded and other times when I didn’t and ended up regretting it.
Long Live Jazz(Dec 09 2017 9:57PM):
The fact that he had to say that maybe they let him stay on the team just because of his work ethic is low-key sad. So if he was not perfect in his job and still gay, would he be fired? Expectations that people want to normalize is disgusting.

Leo Norling(Nov 30 2017 2:15PM):
He then talks about coming out once he switched police departments. With his initial department, it was rumored people who were gay would automatically get fired. Now, with Orlando PD, they did not care about his sexuality.
more
I think this was important to show that, while there are areas of discrimination there are also places where people do not define you as your sexuality. After he came out in Orlando, his other co-officers said who cares, you’re a good cop. This is promising to see for me, being queer. You can still have the job you want and not have to live in fear or discrimination.
Kiana Moon(Dec 05 2017 11:00PM):
This whole video made me happy because even though those closest to her didn't accept her, she stayed strong and continued to be who she is and live the life she wanted to live.
more
She showed that even though you may have obstacles in trying to have others accept you, you can’t let that stop you in your road to finding yourself.
Leo Norling(Nov 30 2017 2:17PM):
Drama (check-it) starts off by describing one her worst times in life. It was being sexually assaulted, and she did not want to tell her family about it.
more
Openly talking about sexual assault is not an easy thing. I think it was important for her to share her story because, unfortunately, it is not uncommon.
Long Live Jazz(Dec 09 2017 10:00PM):
I am not entirely sure if sexual assault within families are more common in a specific race but I know in the black community this is a huge issue. People will literally ignore it as if this does not mess up someone's mental health.

Whitney Langston(Dec 05 2017 8:12AM):
Its so heartbreaking to know that people have to go through these kinds of treaties. Its even more heartbreaking that it had to be by a family member and that this person happens to be gay.
Kiana Moon(Dec 05 2017 10:58PM):
Its awful to her about parents not accepting their children because of their sexuality. This how a lot of young people commit suicide because their own family doesn't accept them.
moreTags:

Many kids only have their family, they do not have many friends. A lot of kids who are gay and haven’t come out yet get bullied in school and to come home to the same treatment is terrible because where do they turn? A lot of the kids will turn to suicide because no one is in their corner.
Aurora Cullerton(Dec 02 2017 2:01PM):
This story is so upsetting. To have a family member tell you that you will essentially become homeless because of who you are can be extremely damaging. I couldn't imagine such a thing its sickening.
[Edited]
Whitney Langston(Dec 05 2017 8:13AM):
Thats another thing that is heartbreaking is that even when someone knows you have no one or nothing, they are still willing to put you out simply because you want to love another human being that happens to be the same sex as you. I do not understand!!!
Jennifer Tyler(Dec 06 2017 10:23AM):
Hurray for her standing up to her hateful mother! I'm happy that she had good understanding friends that she could turn to.
more
This is so significant because otherwise where could she have gone? She may have been forced to stay at home and live a lie. I’ve read several sad stories about how LGBTQ people feel like they have nowhere to turn so they choose suicide. So awful.
Jennifer Tyler(Dec 06 2017 10:29AM):
I love the look on her face!! Like, "hey mom you can hate all you want, you're losing out on having a great daughter!" It's so important to be able to find that confidence!!
more
This is significant because her story can inspire other people in her position to stand up to their oppressive parents. I can’t relate to this story as I’m straight and if I was gay my parents would still support me, they’re supportive of any productive things that I choose to be or do. But I know of lots of kids whose parents have turned them away and they’ve been devastated, so I hope this story reaches some of them.
Leo Norling(Nov 30 2017 2:20PM):
By the end, we learn that Drama is not accepted by her mother as being gay. Her mom "put her out" and continues to.

I love that she smiles at the end and has created her own family of support, her friends. She now is able to say f-it, or I don’t care anymore. I am strong. While I had a supportive experience, I think this video provides a perspective for LGBT members who aren’t as fortunate in that their biological family accepts them. But, it points towards happiness when you form your own family.
Aurora Cullerton(Dec 02 2017 2:07PM):
I'm so happy that Drama (Check-it) can have a smile on her face at the end of her story, but I couldn't imagine having to come to terms with such a horrible thing.
more
Drama is so incredibly strong and I feel like a huge testament to how you have to accept and love yourself to be happy. Even though her mother still refuses her she can still be happy because she loves herself and who she is. I’m sure at first it felt impossible for her to survive, but she seems to have blossomed. I feel her story can/will help a lot of people who have unfortunately been refused by their family. For all of those people I how Drama’s story can help you come to realize that being who you are and loving that is what matters most. You can’t fake who you are through life and some people can’t accept that and that is okay because others will. <3
Long Live Jazz(Dec 09 2017 11:00PM):
This is so relevant in many situations that people are faced with. Being who you are can come with so many sacrifices. Even having to choose yourself over family could be the best option. If you re not happy with yourself than nothings feels right.

It was odd to see someone ask "whats is your sexual orientation". I have never been asked the n my whole life and I feel thats like asking someone "how much money do you make" or "how old are you".
Aurora Cullerton(Dec 02 2017 2:13PM):
This statement is so true. Representation is so very important. People learn from what they see its only human nature. Until recently there hasn't been many positive representations in shows. The tropes usually kill off the LGBT individuals in the shows.
more
I remember when I was little I had no idea LGBT people existed. I identify as pansexual and I feel like if I had seen at least one LGBT person in any media I would have had a much better sense of who I was early on. I just felt confused and wrong. With shows that are coming out now that representation is allowing for LGBT people to see, in a way, scripts and roles they can use to come out to people, or accept themselves. It can be really hard for someone but having any media that represents you can make it infinitely easier to recognize and work through and struggles you are having.
Long Live Jazz(Dec 09 2017 11:05PM):
Representation matters and that is an actual fact. People, especially in today's world, really look for connections between their life and television. Attracting different audiences with different platforms is so vital since it promotes inclusions to all.

Kiana Moon(Dec 05 2017 11:03PM):
Movies and TV help a lot of people who do not know how to go about doing things in real life, figure out how to do them. TV can give people the courage they need to accomplish things they never thought they could.
Leo Norling(Nov 30 2017 6:07PM):
These stars are talking about a TV show lesbian relationship that is in the making throughout the show. It shows scenes as the stars reflect on their roles and the importance of them.
more
I think this show is special because it is LGBT people that are also POC. Acting is definitely a field dominated by whites, so I think this adds diversity that “real” people can connect to.
Whitney Langston(Dec 05 2017 8:16AM):
I think its amazing how a person can have a label that they call themselves and then a person comes into their live and just rises that label away! Seeing what can happen when you let yourself be vulnerable and open is an incredible thing.
Aurora Cullerton(Dec 02 2017 2:16PM):
It is so very scary to make that leap and be yourself. I remember in my own experience that even really knowing everything would be fine and that was what I wanted it is still so hard. I was afraid I'd lose everything, but somehow felt more at home.
Jennifer Tyler(Dec 06 2017 10:34AM):
This is wonderful for kids that are LGBTQ and need a sort of role model, to see something in a video or TV show-something mainstream could be very self-affirming.
[Edited]moreTags:

This is significant because most everyone, especially young and insecure people, need positive role models. They need to see people doing what they want to do and that it’s possible. Television isn’t necessarily the greatest place to get the inspiration to move forward, but seeing it in the mainstream normalizes it for them.
Whitney Langston(Dec 05 2017 8:18AM):
I think that goes for anything in life. Being able to conquer your fears makes you a stronger person. It helps build you up, not only does your fear go away, but it allows you to know you can overcome anything!
Long Live Jazz(Dec 10 2017 1:06PM):
This was such an inspiring message. I, personally, have never watched this show but I can imagine the significance that it holds. People never really know what their sexuality is until an opportunity comes along to show them different. It is possible.
[Edited]
Jennifer Tyler(Dec 06 2017 10:38AM):
I love that these actors are supporting LGBTQ people with encouragement and information about the fact that they're not alone. It may seem insignificant but even the smallest things can have a big impact.
more
This is significant because it’s so important that all people know that there are places they can be accepted for who they are. There’s a lonely desperation that I can empathize with when you think that you’re the only one in the world that feels a certain way.
Leo Norling(Nov 30 2017 6:12PM):
In the end, the two actresses end with saying that there is support being in the LGBT community.
more
I think some of what they are saying is an ad for their show. I also am not a huge fan of the idea that seems constant that a girl says she is hetero and a lesbian “changes” her. I do understand that it can help people feel a connection to the characters, but it gets over done for me.
Leo Norling(Nov 30 2017 6:15PM):
This introduces Elliot Fletcher, a transgender actor who has been cast in Transgender roles. He is able to openly talk about being trans, even if the characters don't reflect his exact story.
more
This is an actor that has definitely influenced me. There really aren’t that many FTM actors playing FTM roles. I really appreciate seeing him in shows, but wish there were more actors that were openly trans.
Whitney Langston(Dec 05 2017 8:19AM):
It is so nice to see a trans person in real life playing a trans character. I think sometimes its hard to put yourself in the mindset of a trans person if you are not trans yourself because you do not understand their struggles.
Aurora Cullerton(Dec 02 2017 2:20PM):
I like how Elliot talks about how experiences are different for everyone. Even though he is transgender and is playing this character who is as well, their experience is different. Its important to note that tons of factors come into one's experience.
Long Live Jazz(Dec 10 2017 1:09PM):
People generally assume that transgender stories do not differ from each other. It probably humble Elliot as he played this role to remember everyone's story is different. He had a great coming out story, but so many do not.
[Edited]
Whitney Langston(Dec 05 2017 8:21AM):
I watch the Fosters and I distinctly remember this scene in the show. It made me so mad when Aaron's mom called him Allison. People need to realize just because you are transgender doesn't mean you are a different person. You are still the same!
Jennifer Tyler(Dec 06 2017 10:43AM):
I'm guessing that a fair number of trans people are familiar with a scene like this. Aaron having a friend with him at dinner is great but for her to stand up for him is fantastic, especially against a parent!
more
I find this significant because, as I stated, there are probably a lot of people who have faced similar scenes. Watching it play out in the media might be helpful to kids who have gone through it-for them to see that it isn’t unusual for this to happen and you can get through it.
Kiana Moon(Dec 05 2017 11:06PM):
Hearing the father say what he said is interesting because a lot of trans people have to deal with this on a daily basis. People do not believe in the way trans people live and the decisions they make.

Trans people are the most vulnerable int he LGBTQ+ community because they go through a lot more than the that are gay and bi. They are completely changing themselves and receive a bunch of criticism along the way.
Long Live Jazz(Dec 10 2017 1:15PM):
"All he did was make sure what he looked like on the outside, matches what he feels in the inside." This was a perfect description and an even greater clap back. People need to understand that identities matter and struggling with that can be stressful.

I love how the friend is speaking to his mom about the situation and trying to make her understand. Sometimes we just can't reach our parents and it's wonderful to have a friend who's willing to tr on our behalf.
more
This is significant because no one wants to think that they’re alone. Having a friend to try to help means so much! It’s significant in any of life’s situations. I can relate because I have a friend that would stand beside me in any situation I might find myself in. She stood with me at the front of the church during my brother’s funeral when I made a speech about him. I don’t remember what I said, but I do remember her hand on my back.
Aurora Cullerton(Dec 02 2017 2:27PM):
This friend in the show is such a great person. I think as a parent it would be hard at first to understand that their child isn't the gender they originally thought. It isn't a bad thing though and this dialog right here could help so many struggling.
more
The emotion here is so very strong. The way this person’s mother says they don’t know who is sleeping in my daughter’s rooms could identify with so many parents and the response from this person’s friend could open so many people’s eyes. Just because someone is born different from how they identify doesn’t change who they are. Inside they are the same person they just look the way they feel. As a parent I know it can be hard, but this is your kid. If you are crying like they’ve died because of this then you know you love them. If you can open yourself to accept who they are you both can be happy. These parents are creating their own problems by not listening and trying to control their child’s life and body.
Kiana Moon(Dec 05 2017 11:07PM):
Its sad to hear about ho many kids there are out there that have been kicked out by their families for coming out as being LGBTQ+.
Leo Norling(Nov 30 2017 6:23PM):

I think it is very important that she covered bullying. The other videos did not, but that is a huge reason why people (in or not in the LGBT community) feel depressed or may want to take their own lives.

I just would like to point out and say that she is so beautiful and her voice is amazing! I just felt as if I had to say that!
Long Live Jazz(Dec 10 2017 1:19PM):

Girls can be cruel when it comes to other girls being very different than the rest, especially in high school. If you're too tall, too short, too big, or too skinny, you most likely have been talked about sometime during your school life.
Kiana Moon(Dec 05 2017 11:12PM):
If all trans youth could find an outlet like she did, or be guided to one, that could be a resource to stop suicide from occurring.
Jennifer Tyler(Dec 06 2017 11:40AM):
Encouraging people to have an outlet for their energy and frustrations is a great idea. Hopefully people are finding acceptance somewhere as well, but there will be frustrations everywhere.
more
This is significant in that it’s great for people to have ideas about healthy ways to deal with stress. It connects to my life as I like to walk for exercise and stress relief, everyone should have healthy coping strategies.
Aurora Cullerton(Dec 02 2017 2:30PM):
I like that Brittney assures the viewer it gets better. Most people who seek out this video are those struggling and looking for an outlet or reassurance. Its really hard to believe things will heal in time.
Whitney Langston(Dec 05 2017 8:24AM):
I love that she said that. It is amazing to me how one person can make such a difference when it comes to bullying. Some people do not understand how it affects others! Everyone needs to know they are beautiful and unique!
Aurora Cullerton(Dec 02 2017 2:33PM):
This is such a nice direct message. Just be yourself it so important. If you spend your life trying to be who people want you will spend your like struggling. If you change because people make fun of you then you will feel so empty inside.
more
Its hard to learn this lesson especially when you are young, but what matters in the end and what makes your life amazing is allowing yourself to be and love yourself.
Leo Norling(Nov 30 2017 6:45PM):
Brittany concludes similarly to Elliot. One should be themselves and that is perfect.
more
I think Brittany was important to make a video. I wish it was a bit longer, that had a bit more of a transition from “I was bullied” to “it does get better”. Nonetheless, it is inspiring in the sense that Brittany is standing there and can talk about her experience tho.

Normally a lot of people tend to hide who they are to keep the job they need. A lot of people do not have the courage to leave a find a place where they are happier because the job pays their bills.

Following your instincts is always significant. There have been many times in my life when I did follow them and was rewarded and other times when I didn’t and ended up regretting it.

Openly talking about sexual assault is not an easy thing. I think it was important for her to share her story because, unfortunately, it is not uncommon.

Many kids only have their family, they do not have many friends. A lot of kids who are gay and haven’t come out yet get bullied in school and to come home to the same treatment is terrible because where do they turn? A lot of the kids will turn to suicide because no one is in their corner.

This is so significant because otherwise where could she have gone? She may have been forced to stay at home and live a lie. I’ve read several sad stories about how LGBTQ people feel like they have nowhere to turn so they choose suicide. So awful.

I think this show is special because it is LGBT people that are also POC. Acting is definitely a field dominated by whites, so I think this adds diversity that “real” people can connect to.

This is significant because most everyone, especially young and insecure people, need positive role models. They need to see people doing what they want to do and that it’s possible. Television isn’t necessarily the greatest place to get the inspiration to move forward, but seeing it in the mainstream normalizes it for them.

This is significant because it’s so important that all people know that there are places they can be accepted for who they are. There’s a lonely desperation that I can empathize with when you think that you’re the only one in the world that feels a certain way.

I think some of what they are saying is an ad for their show. I also am not a huge fan of the idea that seems constant that a girl says she is hetero and a lesbian “changes” her. I do understand that it can help people feel a connection to the characters, but it gets over done for me.

This is an actor that has definitely influenced me. There really aren’t that many FTM actors playing FTM roles. I really appreciate seeing him in shows, but wish there were more actors that were openly trans.

I find this significant because, as I stated, there are probably a lot of people who have faced similar scenes. Watching it play out in the media might be helpful to kids who have gone through it-for them to see that it isn’t unusual for this to happen and you can get through it.

Trans people are the most vulnerable int he LGBTQ+ community because they go through a lot more than the that are gay and bi. They are completely changing themselves and receive a bunch of criticism along the way.

I think it is very important that she covered bullying. The other videos did not, but that is a huge reason why people (in or not in the LGBT community) feel depressed or may want to take their own lives.

I think Brittany was important to make a video. I wish it was a bit longer, that had a bit more of a transition from “I was bullied” to “it does get better”. Nonetheless, it is inspiring in the sense that Brittany is standing there and can talk about her experience tho.
