Great point Paul – how can we incorporate an understanding of the importance of being an informed voter for elected officials in general.

Great point here – students will need to be familiar with safe and respectful ways to respond to each other. So this should come after some community building has already happened in the remote/in person classrooms.

They could, however, think and write about their own ideas related to what it takes to lead a whole country, what leadership (positive or negative) have they experienced in their home country… etc. I appreciate that this curriculum, like the work of the Writing Project, asks students to enter from where they are and move towards the bigger ideas from that point.

His point makes me think that - seeing this as just the curriculum may be short-changing the work. Seeing what happens when youth do their own work, share it with others and then converse with others IS the bigger point which would be great to get people to understand as they adopt the curriculum.

Anna makes a great point that teacher familiarity with this work and how to assess it (or how to rethink assessment?)is important. Teachers need to become familiar with this before they bring it to their students. This could be a distinction that makes this work rise above the others - it is not canned curriculum, but teacher-made curriculum.

I forgot to mention that I was wondering how this will play into our work with students this summer? Might we get a chance see into their gaming experience? Will this be an opportunity to learn from and about them?

From reading this, I am interested in what students think AS they are playing a game. What goals or achievements are apparent to them at the start, what are they thinking as they move through a game and its levels and what do they think they need in order to achieve success? Then - I want to see how this relates to an educational learning environment. How might tasks in a discipline-specific course be structured to tap into these native senses students have as gamers. And then - what do you do about those who do not have this experience in their background? Like the students who come from very traditional school settings who do not know the expectations of group work? What about those students who are not gamers or the learner who thinks differently? As ever, we want to be thinking about the different forms of learning styles in one setting.
