I thought the sentence "many people perceive thinking as hard work, and they recoil from situations that demand too much of it" was important because it highlights why students may shy away from certain subjects or tasks in life. I think this is less about them thinking the work is "too hard" or them being lazy but actually a perfect example of how people respond when they have feelings of inadequacy. They may not believe in themselves or think that it is more work to try and easier to give up. This is something we should steer students away from early on.

I enjoyed reading this section on humor because humor is something I personally value and feel at ease/comfort when I am around humorous people. As stated in the article, humor allows one to be "verbally playful when interacting with others." I think humor can serve as an icebreaker in any setting, work, school, or personal. Scientifically, it has been discovered that laughter reduces stress while boosting ones immunes system which I believe is very powerful and overlooked. As I teacher, encourages joy and laughter is important so that students feel heard, seen, and connected to their environment or those around them.

Beginning with showing student 3 different programs, created by other students, is a good way to introduce using Scratch and helping them understand the unique ways it can be used. Also, the program "fix a bug" gets students thinking about how each block added will result in a change in the program created

I agree with you Aniya, having knowledge without the understand of how to implement is not beneficial to that student at all. If this is observed, determining the most effective way to support is crucial.

I think this idea relates to the idea that all learners express or reveal their knowledge differently, therefore one assessment cannot be used for all. Differentiation is always important when introducing new topics to students but more so when assessing what has been learned. Some do a good job of memorizing word for word, while others cannot memorize but can execute a task. Also, a student may be able to execute but not explain how they did. Such as a student solving a division problem correctly but unable to explain how they got the answer and failing to show their work.

I had this realization after trial and error as I was trying to figure out how to use the program. At first I was intimidated by scratch because I rarely use computers outside of using microsoft word or outlook. I watched some examples/tutorials of the programs and thought "i can't do that" but eventually I was proud that I did figure it out and thought "I can create."

Jacob sounds like a student eager to learn and happy to be in school, which is something that cannot be taught. Although he has struggles with reading comprehension, he will overcome then soon because of his willingness to learn more and the fact that he enjoys all subjects equally.

I think this is a great call out. Jacob must learn to have organization skills immediately so this does not affect him negatively in school or in adulthood. I do think this relates to his forgetfulness and attention span mentioned earlier. Perhaps, giving him a to do list could help him be more organized.

I would agree, that with children who have trouble with attention span it is best to give them only one task at a time to avoid them becoming distracted or lose train of thought in the process of a task

I think this is something that is very overlooked in a class setting and often underestimated. Understanding your students social skills, and whether their skills hinder or enhance their learning experience is important. I believe this will also help to create lessons that include more engagement to help the students learn to work collaboratively and engage with others as a part of their learning. Through observation, you can also attempt to understand why the student is able to or unable to build on relationships in class and ultimately work with parents to better support the students, with additional info.

I believe making deep observations based on the students gestures and presence in the classroom can be helpful when trying to understand the student as a person. This may gave indications to the teacher on the students enthusiasm or look of, in the class, as well as their understanding or comfort in the particular setting. Body language can help one learn what is on the students mind that they are not verbally sharing.

He mentions a great point about students needing to know why they are learning something and how it can be used in order for them to learn in a meaningful context. Through this program they are learning to design, code, experimenting, and collaboration.

I agree with you that working collaboratively is a life skill, as it is used in school, work and many social settings and really a necessity. Coding can be intimidating and I have personally felt it was something that I would never be able to do. Mitch brought up a good point that it doesnt have to be intimidating and does not only come in the form of various letters and numbers on a screen seemingly without meaning. Instead in can be something as simple as a scratch program where kids can Mother's Day cards or play with characters to create content/animation.

Helping students understand how algorithms factor into all of the subjects they are learning, as well as their activities will help them expand their thinking and broaden their understanding. When a student makes a decision to retell a story in chronological order, or solve a math problem using specific steps they are showing their understanding of using different algorithms and why the order matters when executing.

I like that you pointed out that algorithms are not only used by technology, but also by humans in daily activities. I think what many people understand about algorithms can be misconceptions because we may not realize something as simple as making a recipe or managing time and following directions to travel to work is an algorithm we have learned to execute over time.
