It immediately lets the reader know that the review won't be about things that's considered commonly known. The paragraph gets all the things most people have read about the couple out of the way to set up for the actual review.

This paragraph is designed to introduce Louis Howe and illustrate his influence in Eleanor's later interest in politics. It shows that through Howe's likeminded love for community, Eleanor was able to come around to politics and see it in a more appealing light.

The fact that the subject wasn't able to give the biographer talking points or place restrictions on what was being written. Essentially it's because the person being written about had no hand in its construction.

It's usually something readers want to know. Also it offers an opportunity for McCartney to express his thoughts and maybe even divulge something that wasn't written in the biography or falsified.

Yes I think it's possible for a sexual stalked to stalk a femme fatale. However, I still think if Hughes was a sexual stalker then it's only natural to then question whether Assia was truly a femme fatale or not. On the other hand it could just be a case of both parties mutually pursuing the other.

It could apply to Assia in regards to her background. She came from another country and more than likely had completely different life experiences. This kind of foreign quality to her could be perceived as exotic.

My view of Assia doesn't change in this paragraph. Being sympathetic to Assia's background from the beginning, this paragraph only cements my view of her.

If Hughes was a sexual stalker the idea of Assia being a femme fatale is immediately called into question.

To piggyback off Irina, femme fatale is used here to paint a very specific character of Assia. The term immediately invokes the image of a seductress who uses her charisma and looks to ensnare the object of her affections. It leaves little room for doubt or questioning regarding Assia's temperament.

To me the quote does make social, cultural, and psychological factors secondary to Faulkner's genius. It doesn't really exclude them but briefly hints at them. I find that Inge should write this biography because he seems to have an understanding of what made Faulkner great.

The paragraph emphasizes and further expounds on the quotation. It immediately informs the reader of the specific characteristic it takes to be a Faulknerian biographer with the word “bold.” The paragraph also brings awareness to the fact that social, cultural, and psychological context are of little to no use in depicting Faulkner. It explicitly highlights the very thoughts that the quotation briefly touches on.
