America’s Death Penalty

The death penalty was brought to America through European settlers. Our first execution took place in 1608 and now we have killed a multitude of people through this form of punishment. America’s use of the death penalty was for ludicrous crimes including stealing grapes, killing chickens, and trading with Indians.

Britain heavily utilized the death penalty and had various rulers that would abuse this power. William the conqueror was a more sane ruler and only used this form of punishment in times of war. As for the next ruler Henry VIII, he executed about 72,000 people for crimes of treason, marrying a Jew, and not confessing to a crime. Seems these civilizations/cultures used the death penalty in the wrong manner as we do now.

The death penalty has been seen in law throughout many civilizations. It seems the earliest forms took place around 1500 years ago and were brutal forms of killing. This includes crucifixion, drowning, beating to death, and burning alive.

The system does have its’ flaws as some individuals may be discriminated against or are too poor to properly defend themselves in court. Therefore we should strive to eliminate any racial prejudice in our justice system and work to give every person put up for this form punishment an equal opportunity to have a proper lawyer on their side.

Even though the first Amendment right expresses the right to life for all, Amendments 5 and 14 approve the death penalty. Since it is written in our constitution, there should be no problem with the death penalty being used to punish those who commit heinous crimes.

I think the author, Rebecca Skloot, may have been nervous entering these areas as she had lots of trouble finding them and had never visited there before. She also didn't know if her journey would pay off but had the confidence to go there anyway, seeking any information possible about Henrietta. To keep her book more focused around Henrietta's life and her contributions to science, she omits her reaction as this is not a personal piece, rather just a description of the town Henrietta grew up in and where her family was now located. This is a great decision for this style of writing because this book examines the facts and absolutes of Henrietta's life, not opinions on what happened to Rebecca as she went through the Lack's town. If Rerbecca had written aboput her opinions and feelings throughout Clover and Lack's town, the book would've lost its core meaning about finding the hidden information on Henrietta's life. Being any other way would've swayed the reader in thinking Skloot may have adjusted certain facts if she includes opinionated pieces on the lifestyle of Lacks.

Other researchers had taken advantage of them for their skin color and they did not feel that they were being properly represented by the medical field for their contributions, especially from the advances that were made on diseases when using the African American people as test subjects.
