I like that these learning targets are very clear for students to understand what is expected of them and use student-friendly words.

I agree - these will be great for my new-admits who can use it both for self-assessment and vocabulary practice.

This was very helpful in showing what types of assessments correlate with a standard I teach at least once a week. It reminds me of the Bilingual CC Progressions (on EngageNY) that do this based on proficiency level.

I like this idea of giving student-friendly checklists to help students keep track of their own learning. It is also helpful for those who need a tool to hold themselves accountable, like easily distracted students who can check off each box.

I agree this would be great for ENL students, and we could even provide a word bank for the Entering students to use.

This makes me realize that while I am doing some of this, I am not doing this as much as I can. I am going to make sure I plan co-created lessons and give students more voice in developing their own learning.

In reflecting, I used to provide students with choice a lot more. With learning a new curriculum, it has been difficult to do this as much as I used to since I don't know my curriculum as well.

I like that there are both student-friendly learning targets on the left as well as more explicit learning targets for the teacher to help guide us through the lesson.

Adding SEL to Academics

In my school, we have been able to begin adding more SEL components to our ELA program. Teachers have used more text-to-self questions to create deeper connections to a story, or have students think about how they might feel, or what they might do in a similar situation. We are also trying to carve out time in the day for reflection and sharing feelings, thoughts, etc.

Time and Expectations

The biggest factor in doing this is time. We as teachers really don't have time in our days to meet and dive deep into our learning, reflect on it, or create bridges to practice.

Additionally, we have many different expectations piled on us and the students have greater needs than before, which makes meeting these expectations even more difficult.
