The first is an exercise I used to do with a social studies teacher when I was a literary coach when students wrote letters home from the battlefield modeled after real soldiers' letters. Why not have students create a sort of soldier "text set" where they write from the soldiers' point of view in different genres? The second is pairing soldiers' poetry with Walt Whitman's battlefield poems.
