The AI is taking on the role of a thinking partner here.

Actually pretty good prompts, with purposes I hadn't completely considered

I think this was difficult for the AI because we were asking it to think like another person, to anticipate how someone might approach a problem. Seems best to make the questions more "personal" or centered on the person writing in the chatbot

I adapted these ChatGPT essay prompts we generated for use with my regular English 9 semester essay final that just ended today.

The students were more focused than usual, and I think the writing looks better than I expected. Like I mentioned Wednesday night, our conversation while using the AI helped me think through the assignment in a different way. For example, I put more thought into the scaffolding of the writing than I think I would have done on my own, and maybe even more than I would have just in a conversation with you alone, without the AI. Anyway, lots to think about.

Seems like a good idea to have some core skills/playlists that are doable in a shorter amount of time for learners just starting out with playlists. A playlist on commenting for example, seems like something that would be almost one of the first playlists for a lot of users.

Do all playlists have to be visible to everyone when they first begin doing a playlist, or might we have some playlists that are unlocked after having completed x number of tasks or participated for x amount of time?

system view

This idea of a system view being the first thing an earner will encounter is an important one. On the old site <youthvoices.net> I think one of the positives (having a lot of missions) was also a drawback, the "tyranny of choice" when people have so many options that they can't choose because the list is so big. It's easier said than done, but with us all creating different playlists, it seems important to be seeing them all systemically.

playlists participants as guild members

One way to create this kind of guild is through the participants of particular playlists. What if once someone in a playlist earns the badge, everyone else who started that playlist is notified? That way if you finish and I've only just started, I would be interested in knowing what you did to earn the badge and maybe I'm more inclined to connect with you about our shared interest.

A guild level perk in this context, for example, might be the creation of a collaborative literary magazine.

That's a question I should be asking of all the students we teach BEFORE we teach them.

I have to admit that usually when planning I think more about the "what" of the curriculum (as in 'what are we going to do this day/semester' and 'what content will we cover') and not so much about the "who" - the before and after personas. Working on it...

Showing students that we're readers ourselves legitimizes reading for the classroom community. Same goes with other behaviors. We need to model the behaviors we want in our classrooms.

Palmer's mantra resonated with me. Great teachers come in every shape and size, but they all do seem to be true to their selves.

but I see this when teachers feel threatened and they try to hand out punishments for misbehavior, or someone else (like the vice-principal) comes in to take over the situation. In this case power failed when authority was what was needed.

I can relate with this image. Sometimes my teaching feels like I'm crossing a freeway on foot, or maybe it's more like I just feel like I've been run over somedays. But this is an apt metaphor, every day a lot of things come at teachers from a lot of directions. So maybe an even more apt metaphor is that teaching is more like walking through a demolition derby.
