It is not uncommon that we as humans feel like everyone can see every little detail about ourselves, whether it is our appearance, how we talk or present ourselves in social situations. Bringing forth unwanted attention that is less favorable can be intimidating and probably uncomfortable. But do people who are single do it to themselves becuase they are constantly surrounded by couples or is this another aspect of one's low self esteem? Is there a connection to low self esteem and being single or wanting to remain single?

In today's society, relationships have become extremely toxic and there is a lot of negative connotation attached to monogamy. More people prefer to be alone or single in order to not have to deal with the heartbreak, stress, and hurt that comes from relationships, especially unsuccessful ones. As humans, we are social animals but while living in a pandemic, we had to condition ourselves to stay away from other people and keep our distance for our own health and safety. I am sure a majority have come to a point where they have learned how to be alone and not with other people due to living through a pandemic and I am sure it has its impacts on one's social life and relationships. It would be an interesting study to conduct and see how Covid and social distancing has lead people to solitude or feel lonely.

I believe this goes back to the previous statement that people who are in relationships focus less on their friendships and more on their connections with their partner.

The feeling of loneliness that someone who is single might feel could be because of their coupled friends not checking in or keeping in touch as much. At a certain point it can feel like a one-sided relationship and can be both exhausting and disappointing for the individual who is single. However, in this study it could also mean that with age, there are less friends available to gain support from. It would be interesting to examine how friendship and platonic relationships can be beneficial for the elderly population regarding their mental and physical health.
