Many of them said & felt that "school doesn't teach them anything useful in life," citing the ability to do taxes as an example. Students seemed to value more explicit, "how-to" types of instruction for every instance they encounter in life rather than learn general skills like problem-solving and apply them to novel situations. I wondered how I could help my students see more clearly that it's better to learn how to approach & solve a problem (like figuring out how to do taxes on your own) rather than "learning" how to do it and then hoping you remember later on during tax season. I wonder if this mindset is impacted by technology influences (being able to google anything the moment you need to figure something out) or the heightened anxiety my students exhibited returning from the pandemic — they were less willing to take risks and always wanted to know exactly what to expect before beginning a situation.
