As in the quote which you stated, not only for her but everyone who knows her was a character in her life story. We can say that she was the "main character" in her school because of what she did. It's a core memory since she can never go back and change what she did, rather then smile when she remembers- like a book once posted and finished there's no going back to change what you wrote but to admire what has been done.
