Pulls the article back together and appeals to our pathos by providing a personal story of a mother and her children who are now able to receive healthy foods and get more nutrients because of the produce coming from the underground greenhouse that is donated. This shows us that what the underground greenhouse project is doing is truly impactful and has become an important part of the community by providing nutrients to people who would otherwise not have access to it.

Converting all greenhouses in cold climates to underground ones, it could possibly improve greenhouse gas emissions. Uses this from an assistant professor of environmental studies at Dartmouth College, which definitely adds to the credibility of underground greenhouses and the benefits from using them -- big environmental benefit -> could reduce reliance on fossil fuels!!

It’s 1951 and Henrietta is in the hospital. In this chapter, Skloot includes some emphasis on the brutality of Henrietta’s sickness and hospitalization. She brings to light the intensity of the cancer, how quickly it had grown, and how it had taken over her entire body. Henrietta was covered with tumors, tumors on her diaphragm, bladder, and lungs. Her kidneys were in the last stages of failing and her doctors were aware that this was the end. Henrietta’s cousin, Emmett Lacks, heard that she was in the hospital and gathered a group of men, all of whom Henrietta had looked after before, provided a place to sleep, or kept them from going hungry. They heard that she was in need of blood transfusions so they all left to go see her and hopefully be of help. While they were visiting her, Emmett had witnessed an episode of aggressive and overpowering pain come over Henrietta, and never forgot it. He said, “Henrietta rose up out of that bed wailin like she been possessed by the devil of pain itself” (85). After Emmett and his friends visited, the doctors gave Henrietta a large dose of morphine, she woke up confused with memory loss, and told Gladys that she was going to die. She told her to tell Day to look after her kids, especially Deborah who was just over a year old. Gladys called Day saying Henrietta was going to die that night and told him that Henrietta said to take care of the kids and not let anything happen to them. Henrietta died at 12:15 am on October 4, 1951.

This gives the reader a better perspective of the extent of Henrietta’s sickness. The author uses analogy in this sentence, comparing the way the tumors made her stomach look to a six months pregnant one. It provides some imagery for what Henrietta looked like during this time and what she was dealing with. I think this appeals well to pathos. It brings up some emotion in the reader, making us think of all the discomfort and pain Henrietta was in and had been going through for so long for it to get to this point, and yet, she never failed to take care of those around her.

In this paragraph, Skloot uses a more personal story regarding her search for information about Henrietta Lacks. Describing her own personal challenges in finding information about Henrietta, even her actual name, helps the reader come to a greater understanding of the importance of telling Henrietta's story. It appeals to pathos and our emotions as it points to how little is actually know about Henrietta, a person who has had one of the greatest impacts on medical advancement in the history of medicine and calling us to learn more.

In this sentence, Skloot uses perspective to emphasize the impact that Henrietta's cells have had on the scientific and medical world. She moves to a broad scale of possibilities and medical advancements opened up by HeLa cells. This applies to ethos because it calls on the reader to question the ethics of this case and gives a perspective on all the good impacts and improvements the use of HeLa cells has allowed.

In this section, Skloot is appealing to our sense of logos through stating specific facts regarding Henrietta Lack's cells. She points to how this was the very first case in history of immortal human cells growing in a laboratory. Through providing evidence that is irrefutable, the fact that this was the very start of something huge, Skloot helps us understand the significance of the case by appealing to our logos.
