TBH, I think it has a lot of different meanings. It symbolizes how individuals gets divided or separated from one another. It also indicates how individuals may come together in the end, despite all the differences between them. It’s like the author is trying to show us that it’s okay to disagree with one another, but it’s important to recognize that we’re all part of the same world. On top of that, I think it’s significant because it emphasizes the importance of education, since it refers to a math concept. LOL! However, you can interpret the book in whichever way you want - that’s the cool thing about it. It seems like the City in book one is in the present, or at least from around the time of 2013, when the book was published. They seem to have cellphones close to the ones we have today and Obama is president. The City in book two seems to be from the 80s. It's the same character, but only 30 years earlier where they don't have cell phones yet. I'm interested to see how this gets worked into the story. The thing is, in book 2, when City mentioned this hole, it didn't seem like he had any recollection of seeing it or hearing about it before, so it doesn't make sense for that section to just be in the future. This makes me wonder, are there two parallel universes or something like that and each book is a different universe?
