Rereading the text, I noticed that Grandma was protecting the narrator from something by keeping her arm slung across his chest, heavy and thick. Through her actions, it becomes clear that Grandma was serving as a guardian, and the narrator believes that her protection is strong enough to protect him from whatever it was he feared.
