I think that by giving kids ownership on the words chosenthey are more invested. Another thought would be teaching vocabulary through great books. I always include some silly writing mistakes. The kids laugh when I read the samples. It is so powerful when I tell the kids that the mistakes I have made are mistakes that I have seen in their writing!
