I think for my 5th/6th graders, I could see this taking an entire class period. I would either simplify this or maybe make it over the course of a week?

I think this is a great way to introduce the goal of vocabulary! This could easily double over into a science or social studies class.

This could even be a prompt for bell work. Have students (or model) how to respond to a question for that subject.

I think kids often see this step and think it is a waste of time. They want to get their assignment done quickly with very little effort. I think it is OUR job to provide a writing process involving short pieces to really get the ball rolling for them.

I ran into this more often as an ELA teacher, but instead my team wanted to work together to help. The other teachers would come to me asking how we could work together to help the struggling reader/writer in other areas like science or social studies. It truly causes a problem in other content areas.
