For example, working with rising tenth graders ELLs in the summer academy necessitated that students be put in synchronous communication situations in order for them to take the necessary linguistic risks inherent in a language acquisition context. While written exchanges are powerful, it is not equivalent to situations where oral production is emphasized. ELL students need a balance between synchronous and asynchronous communication experiences in order to attain oral proficiency. This would not happen solely from relying on the asynchronous experience so for me the circumstance and the classroom context must factor in.
