Skloot needs to get this phone call right in order to learn about Henrietta and write her book. To me, this appeals to pathos because Skloot needs to appeal to Henrietta's humanity in her conversation with Deborah. Skloot shows Deborah that she wants to write about Henrietta as a person, rather than a science experiment, which is largely what she has been seen as by many people in the scientific community.
