When Henri died, the type of cancer that she had was very new, and it hadn't yet been studied by professionals, so not many people really understood it yet. Even after it had been studied more and Henrietta's cells had been replicated, the entire process was still confusing and kind of frightening for some people, one of those being Sadie. I think this passage gives important insight to how the situation affected the people in Henrietta's life. It helps readers understand the fill extent to which they were effected, where they come from, and why their experiences in this situation are important. It is concise and direct, but gets the point across that the prisoners, assuming they are being sincere, feel bad about their actions and that is why they volunteered. The author makes a very interesting choice, however, to describe their response using a simile, saying they replied, "like a refrain," which, despite what they are saying, makes readers question their sincerity. This simple wording forces us to question what their actual motives are in this situation or if they are truly guilty. She mentions a sheep that was cloned, famously names dolly, and acknowledges that when people think of cloning they often initially only thing of it on a relatively broad scale - such as cloning a whole sheep - but there are steps taken in order to get to that point. Skloot describes that in order to eventually clone an entire being, one first has to clone individual cells and relates this back to the topic of her story as this is what was done with Henrietta's cells. From the get go we are able to understand that there was something wrong with what had been done, and that it didn't only affect Henrietta as an individual, but also those who were close to her. The author also uses descriptive imagery in this passage, especially when singling out Deborah from the rest of the people in the photo. Deborah is described in much more detail than everyone else and, unlike them, appears almost angry in the picture.
