Call back to the very first paragraph, as Janie finally realized her dream of love despite the hardships she faced along the way.

I agree. She finally found love and despite the person being gone, the love can continue through the plant which I think is beautiful. I also think the idea of her planting the seeds bring in the idea of finding self love and cultivating our own growth.

The baby rabbit appears to act as a symbol of Janie. Not only does it show her fear in regards to the storm, but it shows how she felt hidden and unloved/unwanted in the past. This is especially interesting as (despite his many issues) Tea Cake does not make Janie feel unloved or unwanted during the storm, while her other husbands most likely would have.

I agree this entire conversation is nauseating. And not only are his actions being applauded, but people are jealous of how easily he can hurt the woman he supposedly loves, admiring her lack of retaliation as if it makes her a more impressive wife.

I agree and I think her use of the natural elements also shows how real her love for Tea Cake is. With her other husbands, she never really used natural elements to describe them, she only used when describing her dreams of love. Her using natural elements when discussing Tea Cake, even when he has done her wrong, shows that her dream of love has become a reality.

By grinding sugar cane I'm pretty sure its referring to a horse run sugar cane grinder, where the horse walks in circles repeatedly to run the machine. But I agree that this line means Janie feels trapped or even just feels insane as her mind is going in circles without ever reaching or finding an answer.

I agree. While Janie appears much happier and this relationship seems healthier, there is still an uneasy tone that stems from the pattern she has developed of marrying fairly quickly or suddenly.

I find Tea Cake's reaction to Mrs. Turner very telling of his character. First, this is one of the first times he ever gives Janie a command that could be equated to Joe trying to control her. However, it feels truly out of anger at Mrs. Turner and concern for himself and Janie as opposed to simply wanting control.

I agree I think this a significant shift for Janie as she is becoming comfortable and strong enough to share her own feelings and stand up for herself, even resorting to physical violence as, based on past relationships, she equates to strength and power.

Bees in a Blossom

The way Hurston describes Janie being held reminds me of the imagery of the flowering trees and the bees, painting a picture of Tea Cake as a flowering holding Janie, the bee, in its petals. This shows how Janie may have found the true love she has been looking for since sitting under the tree.

Changes in Joe

I find this comment especially sad in a way because Janie's reasoning for liking Tea Cake so much is so similar to her reasoning for leaving with Joe in the first place. He said he wanted to travel and seemed to offer her freedom that she never got. She feels the same with Tea Cake, which makes me wonder if it is foreshadowing that Tea Cake will also let her down, or rather to show the difference between Tea Cake and Joe as Tea Cake will deliver in his promises.

Janie's hair

Janie's first action after the death of her husband is to take her hair down, something he never let her do. This immediate action she takes shows how she has a new found freedom in Jody's death and she can almost be herself again. However, Janie recognizes that she cannot enjoy this freedom just yet as she puts her hair back up before facing the rest of the town.

I think it is also significant that she uses women and chickens as it is reclaims Jody's statement to her that "somebody got to think for women and children and chickens and cows." She is not just beginning to find her voice and stand up for herself and other women, but she is doing so by using the language and example her husband used to try and keep her from finding her voice.

Janie finds joy in hearing the men argue over who would love Daisy more as it brings Janie back to her dreams of love and happiness she had when she was younger, a dream she thought she'd find in Jody. saying that Jody ruined it all for her describes both the singular event and the dreams she had in life as Jody took the love and joy out of both.

Once again, the symbol of the porch represents community and serves as the center of discussion and activity within the town. However, Janie's position inside rather than on the porch with her husband shows how she feels out of place in the community and uncomfortable in the position as the wife of a man with influence.

I agree because I found while reading later chapters it is easy to feel that Joe turned into a manipulative and controlling husband as a result of becoming mayor. However, rereading sentences such as this one shows that he has always been controlling and manipulative, Janie just lacked awareness (causing us as readers to lack awareness) because she was so excited by this new life ahead of her.
