Following her self-reflection, she's reclaiming something in this paragraph. While she may have been shut down and ignored, at least she found the voice to speak on the injustice women faced. It's a significant change from her holding her tongue to avoid any conflict with her husband or the menfolk within the town.

The extended metaphor of blooming and the presence of pollen. After Joe struck Janie, she retreated to her mind and reflected, realizing the fuzzy that initially attracted her to Joe feeling had long been put to rest. This paragraph revealed how disconnected she had been from her inner self.

This is an inside look into Janie as a person. While she hates the mundane duties of running the town as the mayor's wife, she feels that is an obligation, as Joe tells her. It almost feels like he may be guilt-tripping her like, "You're free to use your privilege to get out of chores, but also remember you're the mayor's wife."

Describing the townsfolks' feelings and thoughts as "crayon enlargements" of life almost feels like Janie may see them as simplistic or immature; she may not view them as profound because of the lips uttering them.

Gators

The symbolic use of a gator is compelling. Gators are characterized as stalkers; you never really know when one is lingering around, so most are warned to be wary when near murky waters. The town itself is the murky waters, in the sense that it's changing relatively fast and leaving little time for the citizens to adjust, and the new mayoral couple are the gators. The townspeople analogize the Starks to influential white folk because of their higher standing, which immediately plants the seeds of distrust among the townspeople because of the contextual history.

Jody's "Let It Shine" is akin to gospel hymns. The idea that Jody, a mere man, is "bringing light" to this town puts him on the same pedestal as Jesus, the Light of the World. His saying that the sun coming and going on its own won't stop men from creating light themselves paints him as an extension of God.

Hubris

The power of being this town's revival has slowly seeped into Starks' head. What he's presenting now is tell-tale signs of hubris, and if parables hold any weight, this hubris may be Starks' ruin. While Jody may be doing the brunt of establishing the town, it's typical to want a united front as the town's mayoral couple. However, Jody essentially said "my wife is too ignorant to make a speech" in front of a mass of people who now look up to her. This will not bode well for the future of their relationship.

The other townsfolk have jealousy rooting itself towards the newcomer and his wife. As a way to cope, one of the men makes attempts to degrade Janie, essentially saying she isn't much to look at, but the other catches on quickly. The mere fact that this couple, a man with a strong initiative and his beautiful wife, entered the town and bought up acres of land gives them this untouchable aura. This is evident in the man saying "you can't take no woman (like Janie) away from a man like him (Starks)". I feel as though the bitter envy that's brewing will return later on in the text.

Starks entered this town with the notion that it was well established, as did Janie, but discovered it needed a mayor. Starks now has this idea of being some form of pioneer, almost a savior, for the town by forming a committee and "getting things moving". If he's able, I wonder how the power will affect him as a person and the very new and delicate marriage he has with Janie.

This highlights their opposing views on men: "Oh, to be a pear tree—any tree in bloom!" Young Janie, amid her self-discovery, had a strong desire for womanhood, as she expressed. The desire to experience awakening physicality shrouds her judgment, while in the case of her grandmother, her perception isn't clouded by adolescence but molded from a lifetime of encounters with men.
