By qualifying every statement, climatologists sounded timid to an untrained public that expects certainty. This is why it took so long for the public to believe there was a problem. I think too many people are far too willing to share details that are of little value to others. Narcissism, not self-consciousness, seem to be the bigger social problem in our individualist culture. I get the “everyone gets a trophy” vibe here, but it’s also a skill to know when something you have to say won’t be relevant to others. Far more people are guilty of this, in my observation.
