The women on the other hand during pre-amancipation were performing domestic services, providing for both their african families and owner's families. The women's tasks and work were more universal where the men were accustomed to agricultural activities. Women surpassed men economically, because they could bring what they learned in the south with them to the north as far as domestic services. The men on the other hand would require trained which costs industries time and money and racisms still affected hiring preferences.
