Madison encouraged this system of federalism and supported a central government in order to take away some power from the majority or "mob control". Although gay marriage is only supported by a minority, this issue is bigger than just state law. Human rights are being violated, in which the federal government has gained the right to step in and set a "supreme law" over all states to ensure equality amongst all U.S citizens.
