REally interesting how he doesn't see 'the Drome' on him anymore when he puts on the clothes. While yes, alcohol abuse is a thing that is quite common upon urban Natives, maybe he never had some kind of medical affliction, and instead was commented on his face because people were judging him for being a Native American. Maybe it could be both.

Both Octavio and Tony have parallels

They both are established to be parallels to one another. Both of them have a grandmother they care about deeply, both of them were largely ignored and both of them are screwed up, likely because of circumstances outside their control.

This interpretation reveals the full impact of not rejecting and/or fighting against stereotypes

That's really interesting. I knew that Tommy Orange didn't like Iron Eyes Cody, but I didn't know that they were honored during at the time. Really does show how not making the effort to reject stereotypes can be really damaging, because stereotypes lead to bias, leads to actions, leads to genocide.

Now, the main thing I'm wondering is just WHY this is mentioned in There There of all places. The story seems to be really focused on all the things Native Americans had to go through to come to the circumstances that they are at right now and how that affects their decisions for the future. Why would something that was made for an almost purely practical purpose be mentioned in this book?
