There's a million different reasons why this could have been done. A fact like this definitely has some shock value to it. It could have been kept to the end to provide that shock to the reader. It reels them in even more than they already are.

A femme fatale is the good looking, killer female similar to a character such as the Black Widow. She's as deadly as she look, an enchantress ready to tear your heart apart, much like Assia's character.

To describe Assia this way is to give a very detailed description of her. Anyone would know it.

I'm not sure that the view of Anne in the aggregate is changed much- she's still one of the most notable symbols of Nazi brutality.

However, I think it's beneficial to have some added nuance to who Anne was and how she arrived at her destination as a writer articulating the horrific scenario unfolding around her.

It humanizes her in a different way than most reviews of Anne's life- portraying her as a complex human like any other rather than as a simplistic symbol of the holocaust's barbarism.

It appears to be exasperation at one of two issues: either the author is concerned about holocaust denial and/or skepticism of its lengths, or they are concerned about Anne Frank becoming a hollow symbol for the holocaust, lacking full understanding.

The second issue is obviously a little more complex, but just as valid. It can be a good thing that there is such a recognizable symbol for the horrors of the holocaust- but it's far too easy for the symbol to cease being a human in the eyes of the public. Developing a more complete understanding of Anne is a good objective to have- helping others understand the girl behind the symbol.

She possessed a level of self-awareness that was unknown even to those around her- or at least, had an ability to play the character of "Marilyn Monroe" that was otherwise underestimated.

Not being an expert on Monroe, I suspect most of her biographies focus on her as a sex symbol and object of JFK's eye during her heyday. Frankly, I'm not sure how the second sentence makes her a more "complete" figure- she can cook, ergo complex?

It seems a little silly that the standard for Marilyn Monroe being viewed as a more complex historical figure is her ability in the kitchen and eye for interior design.

Cultural guidance is the influence of what is going on in the world around you at the time. This differs from consumer advice because consumer advice helps us make decisions based on what we need over what we want.

The implication is that all reports on Madison's life should include that "more troubled theme" and not skimp over it like so many others have. Dowling explains that her book extensively explains Madison's life with slaves.

I believe the reviewer is suggesting that slave ownership and Madson's views on the matter are set apart from the rest of his life. His accomplishments aren't viewed side-by-side with his beliefs on slavery.
