He traveled down this mountain, creating animals, fish, rivers, trees, and more along the way. One of his biggest creations was grizzly bears who were human-like. These he sent to the forests which were located at the bottom of the mountain. The Chief was so satisfied with this new world that he moved his family from the Above World to the mountain. They lived inside of the mountain. One day, there was a terrible windstorm. The Chief was frightened, so he decided to send his daughter to the inside of the tip of the mountain where there was a hole to let the smoke from their fire escape. He told his daughter to try to make the windstorm come to an end. He warned her to not let any of her head out of the hole because the wind would catch her hair in its gusts and take her away from the mountain. The girl tried to end the storm, but her curiosity overtook her, and she peeked out of the mountain. Immediately, the wind swept her hair up and took her away to the bottom of the mountain. A grizzly bear was hunting there, and he found the girl and took her home. The girl was raised by a mother bear alongside her cubs. When the girl had grown into a woman, she married a bear. They had half-bear and half-spirit children. Years later, the mother bear realized that her life was almost over. She sent one of the grandsons to ask the Chief for forgiveness for having his daughter stay with them. The twin who was right-handed was responsible, but the twin who was left-handed was rebellious. The left-handed twin tried to be birthed a different way, and he killed his mother. His right-handed brother was filled with anger because of this. He had tried to warn his brother not to be so defiant of as natural a process as birth. The twins grew up with their grandmother. They created clay animals which became full of life, becoming real animals. Meanwhile, the brothers grew more and more hateful towards each other with each passing day. They finally decided to have competitions against each other, such as gambling, to end their rivalry. However, they could not defeat each other until one day when the right-handed brother figured out how to kill his left-handed brother. Once he had killed him, the boy came back home to his grandmother. She was angry, though. This infuriated the boy, and he killed his grandmother as well. However, neither the grandmother nor the left-handed twin died. The left-handed twin now rules over the night. The grandmother's head became the moon, proudly watching over her grandson's kingdom. When you paraphrase, you put information from a source into your own words. You should change the sentence(s) (you should make the syntax and word choices different from the original source's) to fit your writing and style. Paraphrasing requires an in-text citation and a citation in your Works Cited page. An example of paraphrasing is: *Original Source: Research proves that the chances of a child sick with stomach flu spreading their illness to another child is 2 to 3. *Paraphrase: Dr. Barry says that if a child has the stomach flu, 2 in every 3 children that come into contact with the child will also contract the illness (Barry 27). *This information was created for the purpose of this example. It is untrue. When you quote, you use the words from a source exactly as they were written. You surround the quote with quotation marks and include an in-text citation. You also include a citation in the Works Cited page. An example of quoting is: Original Source: The dog chased the cat through the park. Your quote: "The dog chased the cat through the park" (Phillipps 12). You come across a paragraph (in a source that you have not used) that contains some information that sounds like it should be common knowledge. You are not absolutely sure that it is common knowledge, though, as you did not know this information before reading the source. However, in the end, you decide that it is common knowledge. You paraphrase the information from the source, but you do not include an in-text citation or a citation of the source in your Works Cited page because you have been told that you do not need to cite a source if the information you are using from it is common knowledge that you have paraphrased. You hand in your paper to the teacher, and the next day, you get the paper back with a big, red, circled "0" at the top. You ask your teacher why you received this grade, and she tells you that your grade was because the information from that source was not common knowledge; you should have cited the source in your Works Cited page and included an in-text citation. Because of this, you plagiarized. In this case, you accidentally plagiarized.
