Man of Ambition

Here we see a man of ambition. When he finds a ship and other human beings his only care is where the ship is headed. Rather than being happy that he finally found safety he only cares about finishing his ambition. You get the sense that if the ship wasn't heading toward the north pole he wouldn't board. So the only reason he got on board the ship was because it matched up with his ambition.

Sailors know of currents and seasonal winds and take them into account when planning voyages. It seems that Walter put quite a bit of thought into his plan to reach the North Pole which might also explain the calm beginning of his voyage.

The ambition of Walter seems to be to overcome what seems like an impossible goal. He wants to explore an area which as never been seen before or even reached. Personally I think this is a noble purpose, in that he has a goal to do something that has never been done before as it is incredibly difficult. But despite this he is going anyway.

In the ancient mariner killing an albatross is what start a series of unfortunate events. He means that he won't take any unnecessary risks that might endanger himself or the ship.

This suggests that he is a self made man, both from the fact that he taught himself growing up and that he became well known as a sailor through his own hard work. In short he pushes himself towards what goal he sets for himself and accomplishes it.

The author is making a point about how even though the shepherd is offering so much to the nymph now in a short time his love will fade away. It's probably meant to show how love can feel overwhelming at first but over time it will fade into nothing.

I think the author is trying to make a point about how people offer many things in the name of love even when they can't realistically provide them. Think about what the shepherd is offering, golden buckles and amber studs to name a few, and think about if a shepherd could really offer something like that.

What criticism do you think Chaucer is making of the Pardoner, or the church, by telling this story?

The criticism that Chaucer is making is that the church is hypocritical. The Pardoner denounces the revelers who got too greedy yet he acts more like a salesman trying to sell pardons, offering special chances and even offering the chance to kiss "holy" relics for even more money. Basically Chaucer is criticizing the church for denouncing sins, like greed, yet acting sinful themselves.

What is plagiarism and how to avoid it.

One type of plagiarism that stood out to me is Mosaic plagiarism. Basically what that means is, a person will take a quote or idea and change a few words or paraphrase in a few areas. The plagiarized material will then look different as some parts are the same but some parts are different and it's all connected to together like a mosaic.

There are two ways to avoid this type of plagiarism if it was unintentional. One way is to paraphrase but not just words or small sections. In order to avoid plagiarism you have to paraphrase the whole quote or idea so it is in your own words. The second thing that can be done in addition to paraphrasing is citing. Citing is giving credit to the original source of a quote or idea. This is one of the most basic ways to avoid plagiarism as it is giving credit to the original owners of the intellectual property. Citing is very simple but it does change depending on what type of format you are using. In MLA format what you usually do is, at the end of the quote or paraphrase, you put the author's name in parentheses along with the number of the page if the quote is from a book.
