"Pride in my nation is not a problem... / But what also follows me? / In my community where homophobia / And prejudice is very common."

I can relate to this. It's painful and saddening when one's own community -- the people whom one recognizes as one's own -- dismiss a whole chunk of one's identity.

Poets as survivors.

For me, the metaphor of bravery as shrapnel brings to mind shiny flecks of metal stuck in flesh, and makes me think of a soldier. Like maybe the poets are survivors of battles within themselves as artists; or maybe they are survivors of battles with societal norms and conformity; or maybe they are survivors of an actual war -- army veterans who write their way to healing together at a community center.

Their rhyme makes the language sound more beautiful and thoughtfully-composed, like music. Also makes it easier to remember. And this rhyme highlights the difference between the front yard and the backyard -- between the weeds and the roses.

I agree. The tone shifts, but the content is the same. HOWEVER, that tonal shift clues you in to the content that you just skipped over, and makes you re-read the first five lines.

Yes! I hear the repetition of the "h" that you're talking about in the title, "Harlem Hopscotch"; and the "g" in "Good things for the ones that's got"; and the "c" in "Curse and cry".

But so what? Those alliterative "g"s definitely seem to ground a reader in physical reality - they order the muscles in the back of one's throat to clamp down on each other to make their hard
"g". Sort of like in hopscotch, when you come to two squares next to each other and you can come down hard on both feet. So the alliterative "g"s in "Good things for the ones that's got" emphasize the idea that "the rich get richer."

Now, how do the alliterative "c"s in "Curse and cry"shape the meaning that a reader makes of the poem?

Yes, I see the rhyme in the first two lines of each stanza. Rhyme makes me hear the text’s ‘voice’, and feel its physical effect in my body.

When there's two boxes next to each other in Hopscotch, you can put two feet down. The rhyme in the second line feels like when you hop on one foot first and then get to put two feet down second.

Does the rhyme make you feel anything in your body?

Hopscotch would no way be enough of an escape, given the harshness of the reality you're talking about. And to suggest that it would trivializes people's "struggles of life".

I do see what you're saying -- hopscotch could be a strategy for survival. But I see it as a strategy for jumping from one safe space to another, dodging the dangerous places. When we played hopscotch growing up, we would mark one space in the middle with the word "Safe". Otherwise it would be too hard to get all the way to the end. You could rest on that step without getting "out".

OHH. Wait. I remember. Officer Bell had it out for Fonny after Officer Bell was prevented from arresting Fonny at the Italian lady's grocery store. That white guy had begun to assault Tish IN THE GROCERY store (who does that?) when Fonny saw, and lunged at the man. He threw him out the door, and that's when Officer Bell came and tried to arrest Fonny. Fonny had been trying to protect Tish. So, it kind of makes sense that Tish would say he's in jail because he worries too much. Oliver -- Is there something I'm missing here?

The discovery of Fetal alcohol syndrome was made in the same year that Baldwin was writing his book - 1973. (https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(73)91092-1/fulltext) The scientists who made the discovery published their findings in November of that year, after Baldwin sent his writing to the publishing company for editing and printing. My mom drank cocktails while she was pregnant with me in 1961. I think it takes more alcohol than she drank to hurt the fetus, though. I came out ok.

That was the ethos of the times -- that categorical kind of thinking. He was writing this book in the late 1960's and early 70's, after the assassinations of civil rights leaders Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and Medgar Evers, as well as of President John F. Kennedy (JFK), and Attorney General Robert Kennedy. And it was the time of the Vietnam War, when the government was drafting young Black, Native American, and Puerto Rican men at far higher rates than white men. It was a time LIKE NOW, when many Americans were declaring, "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem," and "You're either with us or against us," and demanding to know, "Which side are you on?"

Comparing Fonny's mother's church to jail. That's pretty heavy. If I didn't know Baldwin's work, I'd be worried he's treading on thin ice there, insulting other people's religion. Except it's his own religion. His stepfather was a pentecostal preacher, and so was Baldwin himself between the ages of 14-17.

Wait til you read Part 2 of this book! You will find out more about Mrs. Hunt and her religion.

"Pentecostalism is a form of Christianity that emphasizes the work of the Holy Spirit and the direct experience of the presence of God by the believer. Pentecostals believe that faith must be powerfully experiential, and not something found merely through ritual or thinking. Pentecostalism is energetic and dynamic." -- BBC

I hear LOVE in this statement, not hate. I think Baldwin is saying that the Black church was wrong to call the people sinners. Baldwin is holding America's racist society accountable for putting people in horrible situations where they had to make choiceless choices. They didn't become alcoholic or drug-addicted because they wanted to. They didn't become mentally ill, sick from overwork, or suicidal, because they felt like it. They didn't become sex workers or gang members or thieves because they were "bad". Baldwin is saying that our white supremacist society limited their options so much that it destroyed their lives, families, physical and mental health, and safety. Black people didn't deserve to be called sinners by the church. Instead, they deserved to be supported in organizing against racism.

Baldwin is using the metaphor of polishing shoes or furniture or any hard surface, saying that white people want to clean their society of Black people. His metaphor enables him to plant in the reader's mind an image of Black people as dirt - as in, Black people being treated "like dirt". Makes me think of how young Black people (and other people of color) are treated as if they are disposable - as if they don't matter.

Baldwin extends the metaphor in the next sentence, where he italicizes the word "was" (see how its letters are slanted?): "I WAS being spat upon. Think about it - sometimes, if you don't have shoe polish or water handy, you might just spit on the dirty spot on your shoe, and rub it out.
