Summary Weeks 3-12

Really a packed curriculum. Too much to get through in the time allotted with ELLs, weather closures, student absences and vacations and jury duty. I need more time to help my ELLs with basic comprehension of the material. Interviews have gone very well, street interviews and 'expert interviews' as well. Students are doing well editing in Premiere also. Need to record narration as a thread to bring everything together. Concerned that with all the challenges with my ELL and immigrant population of students coupled with behavioral issues associated with at risk populations that we are unable to produce the level of quality that will warrant college credit. While this is an exceptional opportunity, this piece of the program needs to be fine tuned to be efficient. If not, it will add yet another layer to an already complex and multifaceted program that will take away from the ability to produce the original deliverables (website and portfolio) which in the end will be for naught.

Summary of week three

Students conducted mock interviews and watched them. This enabled them to identify what makes a strong interview. What works/looks good and what doesn't. It also gave students more hands on practice with the camera and helped facilitate an understanding of framing shots. During the second session we reviewed Photoshop. Technically this was to be done during session three but due to a blizzard a Photoshop training I had planned with Stephen Hess was postponed therefore I did this exercise late. We watched the full documentary: Alienated and discussed approaches to the remix. Students want to cover what is happening with this issue now specifically under the Trump administration. Two students heard that people in the Caribbean community in Crown Heights have been stopped and asked for ID and taken to the precinct of ID is not produced. One idea we came up with as a group is for students to find people who been through this or witnessed this and interview them. In our group discussion the question of immigrants committing drug related offenses came up and I encouraged the student raising the issue to research and find statistics in order to debunk this stereotype.

Summary of week two

Week two also went well. The warmup exercise in which students sit back to back and draw with one giving instructions was a really good lesson in the importance of clarity in communication. Students are engaged in group discussion. ELL's are reaching out to communicate and it is working! Students are split between racism and immigration for their topics, there may be a way to merge them. They have gotten started creating their sites in Wix and importing and adjusting their portraits in photoshop. Exercises take longer for ELL students so finishing the lesson plans in time is a challenge. Thursday session was cancelled due to snow.

Summary of week one

Week one went well. The students responded well to the ice breaker exercises. They were also engaged in discussions about what is a social issue and what is a remix. Discussions about remixing revolved around musical remixes and that served as a good analogy. The survey took students a long time, in some cases well over 20 minutes so we were unable to get the Wix accounts opened.

I find it hard to look at GWB without wanting to critique his presidency. It's refreshing that this youth is able to simply use him as a vehicle for exploring the electoral process itself

This was a great way to get students to research the 2008 election. Relevant as ever now, too.
