Having the highest incarceration rate in the world is nothing to be proud of, yet it's become such a major part of our economy that it is comical to believe it can halted. Politicians like to condemn other oppressive regimes for the way they treat their citizens, yet we don't like to look in the mirror. Trump made such a huge deal of Assad bombing innocent children in Syria, yet Tamir Rice, a 12 year old, is shot and killed by a government run agency for no justifiable reason and no justice is given. Many really tried their best to justify his death which was so shocking and hurtful. Yet when it's not on our turf, it's a tragedy and must be stopped. Smh. Portraying black neighborhoods as drug infested served as a catalyst for the new drug policies that crushed these communities. The documentary, 13th, talks about the KKK was reborn due to Birth of Nation. Even in last year's presidential campaign, the media had a huge impact on which candidates got the most airplay. Often times, repetition subsequently becomes fact. Though everyone has a choice in what they watch, it's discouraging to see major platforms spew negative rhetoric simply for ratings. This rhetoric causes real damage to real people and it's important major media platforms to realize the responsibility they have in shaping public opinion. Many were quick to undo much of his work and accused him of crating a political climate that was too "correct" and unwilling to speak frankly about issues. In my opinion, this rhetoric was just a way to justify racist policies. We saw this countless times in Trump's campaign. He insulted many minorities but was still successful because he wasn't being a typical politician. If a black person had ran a campaign like his, he would lose much of his political capital. Felons are basically the lowest class in our society. They lose their right to vote, receive student loans, own homes, etc. It's interesting that we expect them to somehow reintegrate into society when they are denied the basic resources everyone else gets.
