It may be that it is not his eye that is evil, but again his own soul which the eye may perceive, reflecting another theme of the fact he must hide his own wickedness and believes he does it well, as he knows the old man suspects nothing. As I mentioned below, he is reflecting his internal hatred of his 'heart' and himself onto the outside world to cope with it while avoiding responsibility. Even now he blames his murder victim for the murder, though he cared for the old man, he believes he can see into his soul and behold the same darkness Poe knows is there. So he must die. Could this represent the ceaseless beating of the heart in the floor OR is this the beating of his own heart? Has this external annoyance that drove him to the act actually internal, a hatred of himself and his own sickness in his heart he cannot recognize as an awareness of his own hideous heart and so it is projected outward as noises and forces only he is victim to, thus the line "It is the beating of his hideous heart" actually reflecting his own confession to murder and his sickness and less a direct comment on what lie beneath the floor boards? Is his heart therefore, the tell tale heart whose beating and hideousness so appalls him?
