Thanks Peri. https://nowcomment.com/documents/240393?scroll_to=2206569 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240393?scroll_to=2206569 Modern humanism has totally replaced the power of God with the power of self. Tue, 13 Oct 2020 11:03:10 -0400 Some questions to consider, on any bible passage: https://nowcomment.com/documents/233576?scroll_to=2114190 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233576?scroll_to=2114190 What stands out? What questions does this passage bring up? What can we learn about Jesus here? How could we apply it to our lives? Who could benefit from hearing about this passage? Why are these passages in the bible? Sat, 03 Oct 2020 10:59:13 -0400 Spiritual gifts? https://nowcomment.com/documents/233576?scroll_to=2114189 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233576?scroll_to=2114189 Some churches land on these verses: speaking in tongues, handling snakes, drinking poison as promises that if you're saved you'd be able to do this things. But perhaps, these were gifts reserved for believers when they needed them. We know Paul was bitten by a snake and didn't die, I don't think that means we should go grab a rattlesnake. So these words of Jesus are examples, not 'givens'. 1 Corinthians 12:30 All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they? Sat, 03 Oct 2020 10:54:48 -0400 The stone was rolled away... https://nowcomment.com/documents/233576?scroll_to=2114188 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233576?scroll_to=2114188 I was thinking, Jesus in his risen body could pass through walls (like he did when he appeared to the disciples) so the stone wasn't rolled away to let him out. It was rolled away so people would know that he wasn't there. So people would have evidence, and believe that he had risen. Sat, 03 Oct 2020 10:45:11 -0400 Eyes open https://nowcomment.com/documents/231221?scroll_to=2114186 https://nowcomment.com/documents/231221?scroll_to=2114186 I wonder if I'm like that sometimes, I see what's happening and think that it's hopeless or out of control, when God has it all under control and has plans to use it for our benefit. Sat, 03 Oct 2020 10:36:05 -0400 Probably right https://nowcomment.com/documents/231221?scroll_to=2114183 https://nowcomment.com/documents/231221?scroll_to=2114183 I guess I thought of kneeling as being humbling, but when you're laughing and mocking - it's just more an insult. I suppose that's true with many things, the manner in which we do them makes a big difference: begrudgingly, happily, mockingly. Sat, 03 Oct 2020 10:33:12 -0400 Reminded me of Aaron https://nowcomment.com/documents/231221?scroll_to=2096238 https://nowcomment.com/documents/231221?scroll_to=2096238 If we're in the right group it is possible to please the group and honor the Lord, at least hopefully, when we're in the company of believers. But when it's not possible, even sometimes in a group of believers, you're right we have to please God over man. It reminded me of Aaron in Exodus, he had the opportunity to correct the people when they wanted to create an idol and worship it instead of the Lord, but rather than be the leader that the nation needed, he succumbed (fairly quickly apparently) to the pressure of the people. I pray that we'd be the leaders that people need as well. Mon, 28 Sep 2020 13:55:04 -0400 He didn't take it. https://nowcomment.com/documents/231221?scroll_to=2091884 https://nowcomment.com/documents/231221?scroll_to=2091884 There was a Proverb that strong drink should be given to those who are perishing, to dull the the pain. The myrrh is probably some kind of medicine. But Jesus refused, he was willingly suffering every agony on our behalf. Sat, 26 Sep 2020 12:55:16 -0400 Why did they kneel? They are mocking him, spitting on him, and kneeling and bowing...seems like a contradiction. Thoughts? https://nowcomment.com/documents/231221?scroll_to=2091881 https://nowcomment.com/documents/231221?scroll_to=2091881 Sat, 03 Oct 2020 10:33:12 -0400 What stands out to you from this chapter? https://nowcomment.com/documents/231221?scroll_to=2091865 https://nowcomment.com/documents/231221?scroll_to=2091865 Sat, 26 Sep 2020 12:46:34 -0400 I think the disciples looked back at the last supper, and Passover and realized the significance. https://nowcomment.com/documents/226422?scroll_to=2075494 https://nowcomment.com/documents/226422?scroll_to=2075494 Peter wrote in 1Peter 1:19 nowing that you were not [r]redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. He knew, or the Holy Spirit showed him the significance of Christ's sacrifice. Too often we fall into that fear of what others will think, without considering God's opinion. We can't serve two masters. We can't please the people around us all the time and please God. You hear of people worshiping creation because who can miss it? The grandeur shouldn't distract us from the reality that this is all going to come to end - only our souls and what is done for Christ will last! Thoughts? Sun, 21 Jun 2020 09:32:50 -0400 They marveled. https://nowcomment.com/documents/205656?scroll_to=1910816 https://nowcomment.com/documents/205656?scroll_to=1910816 but they did not change. In fact, they twisted this wise answer of Jesus into a lying accusation against Him. In Luke 23:2, they accused Jesus of forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar – when He actually said just the opposite! Wed, 10 Jun 2020 17:23:48 -0400 We just talked about these courts on Sunday. https://nowcomment.com/documents/200299?scroll_to=1891626 https://nowcomment.com/documents/200299?scroll_to=1891626 God intended the courts around the temple to be the place of approach for God's people, it was the only place commoners could enter and get close to God's presence. But people, selfishly had sought make this into a business place by preying on people's sense of longing to be near God. Are there are similarities in our world today? Fri, 04 Dec 2020 13:45:21 -0500 Leaves but no fruit! https://nowcomment.com/documents/200299?scroll_to=1891608 https://nowcomment.com/documents/200299?scroll_to=1891608 Apparently this was some kind of false advertising. It wasn’t that the fig tree didn’t have figs because it wasn’t supposed to. The problem is that it had leaves but didn’t have figs. The leaves said, “There are figs here,” but the figs weren’t there. There were many trees with only leaves, and these were not cursed. There were many trees with neither leaves nor fruit, and these were not cursed. This tree was cursed because it professed to have fruit, but did not. How many people are like this fig tree? Fri, 04 Dec 2020 13:45:21 -0500 Finally people welcome him as they should. https://nowcomment.com/documents/200299?scroll_to=1891605 https://nowcomment.com/documents/200299?scroll_to=1891605 I like this slice from the life of Jesus because it feels right. For much of Jesus’ ministry, He was despised and rejected. Often the adoring crowds followed Him only for what they could get from Him. All of that was different on this day. I wonder how he would be received today if he were to come back in this way. I think, because children can receive the blessing of Jesus without trying to make themselves worthy of it or pretending they do not need it. We need to receive God’s blessing the same way. Charles Spurgeon said: “While men have no faith, they are unconscious of their unbelief; but, as soon as they get a little faith, then they begin to be conscious of the greatness of their unbelief.” Mon, 27 Apr 2020 16:33:02 -0400 Elijah, Moses and Jesus https://nowcomment.com/documents/196952?scroll_to=1833674 https://nowcomment.com/documents/196952?scroll_to=1833674 Here, just after we read about Elijah and Moses appearing, back from the dead, Jesus tells the disciples that he'll die and rise, but they don't understand. It's like it's all too much for the human brain to comprehend. Have you ever had a "This is too much to comprehend" moment, or a time when you were initially confused but looking back you thought - "Why couldn't I see it?" Like Elijah calling down fire from heaven like 1 Kings 18:38. I think the point is it wouldn't have mattered what Jesus did, healing people, feeding thousands, turning water to wine, they were so hardened they would never believe. Some versions say 'could not be hidden'. Is your life like that? Can Jesus not escape notice? Can he not be hidden? How do we make sure that Jesus' presence in our lives cannot be hidden? When I read this I wondered about the pharisees how many things you could say about them, or about people in today's church like: They attend church, but their heart is far from Me. They read their Bible, but their heart is far from Me. They pray eloquently, but their heart is far from Me. They contribute money, but their heart is far from Me. They love to sing, but their heart is far from Me. They talk to others about Jesus, but their heart is far from Me. Check your heart place is it near to God? Tue, 14 Apr 2020 18:02:54 -0400 Tradition not scripture https://nowcomment.com/documents/189705?scroll_to=1768144 https://nowcomment.com/documents/189705?scroll_to=1768144 The pharisees knew these requirements were only 'tradition' not actual scripture and yet they still criticized the disciples. They obviously chose tradition over scripture. It's not surprising today then, when you look at all the different Christian denominations and so many of them differ on traditional issues rather than focusing solely scripture. He does have complete power, and He will work things out - it's not always like we expect obviously. Tue, 24 Mar 2020 10:46:38 -0400 Good point. https://nowcomment.com/documents/179119?scroll_to=1708008 https://nowcomment.com/documents/179119?scroll_to=1708008 Perhaps the torment is being absent from a human 'host', "seeking rest and does not find it." I got to thinking it's often difficult to understand God's ways. I bet you can think of examples of that (God doing something you didn't expect) in your own life. Share them as a response here if you want. If one just wanted to hear pleasing things, even teachings veiled as truth they could (and many do). 2 Timothy 4:3"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires" But we're instructed to listen to word of the Lord, and submit to Him. Prov 3:6 In all your ways acknowledge Him; and he will keep your paths straight. Isaiah 41:10: says: Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Why is the world afraid? What do they have to fear? Better yet, what's the real problem: "Do you still have no faith?" Only faith in God can bring the peace the world so desparately seeks.
