The war on drugs started by president Richard Nixon was a big factor in mass incarceration. Because the main users of major drugs was hippies and African Americans after the government put cocaine out on the streets intentionally.

This led to the mass incarceration of those who sold and abused drugs during this time period. Triggering a chain reaction of the same behavior to occur many years to follow

I agree with Alyssa because it continues to push forward a viscous cycle of generational incarceration which also contributes to families living below the poverty line.

The government puts too much money and resources into negative things. When all of these billions of dollars could be spent on bettering the education system. Building communities and setting up rehabilitation centers for those incarcerated.

I think mass incarceration is just used as modern day slavery. Particularly for those who are people of color and lack sufficient resources to thrive in society. And once incarcerated you are the literal definition of a slave and work for free.

Which starts a system of generational poverty based on class and race. There is even a study known as the school to prison pipeline system which puts on full display the measures govt. take to make sure the prison systems they are funding and actually profiting from continues to stay in "business".
