Once you are detained, the system no longer cares about your well being. You are stripped of your independence and they control your every decision. Why would they want to give up that power? I think this is why we tend to see more police officers around the time new laws are made because they are expecting people to violate these laws in order to recruit new inmates. The health care isn't very efficient and the inmates cant do anything about it without being punished or overlooked. The food isn't good and even pushes people to starve themselves. Inmates are no longer seen as human to the justice system. We make up only 5 percent of the worlds population and yet we have 21 percent of the worlds prisoners. If you think about it, every aspect of our lives are controlled by the system in some way, shape, or form. Especially because today, we use technology in mostly everything, making our personal business more accessible and able to be controlled. We are only "free" under the systems control, rules, and regulations. Prisons are the only legal form of modern day enslavement, being that slavery is abolished. In addition to the hardships of already being discriminated against as a minority, they have to face not being able to get jobs, stability, or provide for themselves which a lot of times lead to them being repeated offenders. Statistics are already made based off of education drop out rates among black males. Even if they do completely serve their sentence, they have more problems like not being able to get jobs and these circumstances make it more likely for repeated offenders. Knowing it is harder for felons to obtain efficient jobs, the system sets them up for failure which partially explains why we have the highest mass incarceration rate in the world. I feel that because they can't really provide for themselves, they result back to their criminal ways in order to get by which eventually places them back in the predicament from before.
