The townsfolk thought the only way they could try and change Atticus was if they got enough people to basically verbally harass him, he would change his views. It wouldn't have worked, however, and the cartoon was not a big deal whatsoever. When Lula criticized her, it may have been evidence that Calpurnia may, and more likely, had a rough past with white people.
