However, wealthy wives were expected to stay at home and raise the children. The wealth of the Studevants allows Mrs. Studevant the luxury of having Cora do all of her household chores, but notice that Cora also takes the responsibility of caregiver for children and the elderly. A person arguably needs support most at the beginning and end of their lives, and it is Black women who are filling this role for White families instead of their White mothers.
