She gets terrible grades in school, which makes her parents lose hope she'll ever make it in life. Jessie was spanked and scolded and it lowered her self-esteem. Since she’s lost all faith from her parents, the only option she has left is Cora. Someone who has faith in Jessie. In terms of society, I think parents tend to have expectations that are just too high for their child to reach. Not only that but some kids just don't do good in school. That doesn't mean that they aren't capable to do good in life. I believe Hughes brings the topic of relationship towards the family as an aspect to appeal to certain audience that could possibly relate. In the beginning, there was obvious confusion but as they started to know each other and their vulnerability, they started to manipulate each other towards the end when everyone's true colors showed. As a reader, I personally don't think Estelle had any attraction towards Garcin. I think because Estelle was so self absorbed she just needed an accessory to be by her side. Although, I can see how Estelle could've felt hopeless and just needed a man to love her.
