Sometimes as educators we forget the socioeconomic status of our students. In the poorer communities often times children don't have access to a computer or the internet. This can make it difficult for these students to participate in learning.

Many teachers and students are use to the traditional way of teaching and learning. I actually find that it is a lot of teachers, not students, that are not comfortable with moving learning to online. Some feel that online learning takes away the personal interaction one gets from physically being present. There are many advantages to online learning that can be beneficial to both student and teacher.

Both QSSSA and roving paragraph frames are good scaffolding approaches to help ELL students.

Both of these approaches allow the students to use their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in their acquisition of new language. I like the roving paragraph approach because it allows students to interact with their peers. This allows for a more relaxed environment to learn.

Sentence stems, or sentence starters are very helpful to get students to start the conversation.

Many times I find that ELL students know what they want to say, they just lack the words and sometimes the structure on how to articulate their thoughts. Providing them with sentence stems gives students the opportunity to respond in the form of a complete sentence to effectively communicate and it takes away the pressure of thinking about how to correctly formulate a response.

Accents can be very distinguishable and can cause people to stand out, and sometimes not in the best way. However, I do believe that accents are a part of a person's identity, and people learning a new language should not throw away their accents to try to fit in. Like Gerson, other bilingual students should be proud of their accents because it is a part of their culture.

A tool I used to help ELL students strengthen their oral language skills was in a small group I would show them a card of person doing something, and the child had to describe to me what was happening using verbs. i.e "I see a boy digging a hole."

There are many benefits to using visuals as a tool to educate your students. A few of these benefits are it helps some students store information longer, it aids in better comprehension and it drives motivation. I remember plenty of times when I was younger the teacher would wheel in the t.v (they don’t do that anymore) and we all would become so excited about whatever it is that we were going to be watching.

Mr. Morrell's three anchoring questions are How do we get kids excited about learning? How do we develop these academic, literate or intellectual identities? How do we make education more digital?

As an educator, of the three anchoring questions I feel that finding ways to get students excited about learning is most important. Once you find the motivating factor the students then become the teacher because now learning is not a "chore". I agree with Mr. Morrell that “there is a disconnect in the classroom between what kids really like to do and what they’re being asked to do….” Incorporating children’s interests into the curriculum is that motivating factor that makes students want to learn. And it also makes learning stress-free because they are doing something that they like.
