Thu, 07 Jul 2022 19:05:56 -0400 But the "how" may matter... https://nowcomment.com/documents/317693?scroll_to=2846357 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317693?scroll_to=2846357 A lot of people have followed Eby and argued that service-learning can be helpful, however, to do so, the service-learning experience must keep some of the principles and best practices Eby outlines at the forefront. I am looking forward to seeing how you think we do with those principles in this course. Thu, 07 Jul 2022 19:04:47 -0400 Critical thinking https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2844237 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2844237 A few years ago NC State launched a critical thinking campaign to encourage this kind of thinking among students. It's interesting to think about ways that we might foster critical thinking skills. And, perhaps some of the barriers to teaching these skills. Tue, 05 Jul 2022 09:14:58 -0400 Questions! https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2844231 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2844231 Mia, this is a good point and part of why I am emphasizing asking questions so much in this course. We have to start asking questions if we are going to be able to uncover what underlying the data we encounter. Tue, 05 Jul 2022 08:56:51 -0400 Yes and... https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843947 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843947 This is such a great point Kelsey - context definitely matters and is so important. However, as we'll talking more about in upcoming modules, journals and media often have word limits and other constraints that may make it difficult for researchers to include everything. In addition, the context often might not be "sexy' enough for these publications to get the hits, likes, views, etc. that they want. It's an interesting conundrum! Sun, 03 Jul 2022 18:42:07 -0400 Great point https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843870 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843870 Riley, this is a great point and something that I am hoping we will all learn in this class - to dig deeper behind the information we are bombarded with! Sun, 03 Jul 2022 09:15:59 -0400 Coming soon! https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843731 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843731 Sydney - this is a really thoughtful question! One of our next modules is about bias. I hope you'll keep thinking about this question as you move through that module and our community-engaged project. I'll be curious to hear more about what you and the rest of our class thinks. Sat, 02 Jul 2022 13:24:31 -0400 Fascinating point https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843730 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843730 Natalie - this is such a great point because it leads to the "now what" question. If people aren't comfortable with basic mathematical principles then how do we either share information in a way that doesn't require them to have these skills or how do we help them get these skills? This is one of the reasons that I love teaching methods because I feel like I am doing my part (even if it's a very small one) in introducing folks to the importance of methods. Sat, 02 Jul 2022 13:23:21 -0400 Mutation https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843729 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843729 Yes, and what we have to realize is that we are all human beings and have our own identities and biases. We can work to minimize the effects of our identities and biases as much as possible, but they are always there. What we need to do as researchers is be clear about what those are and how they influence the process AND to always be on the lookout for the influences in others' research. Sat, 02 Jul 2022 13:20:54 -0400 COVID https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843728 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843728 Dawn, good point. I got kinda burned out on talking about how much sociology there is in COVID but it is such a good example. Sat, 02 Jul 2022 13:19:18 -0400 Another reason for this course https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843727 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843727 Yes, most people haven't taken a social research methods course. And, this is a great illustration of how this course can help you in your life no matter what you study or do for a job. Sat, 02 Jul 2022 13:18:35 -0400 Foreshadow of what's to come https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843726 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843726 Natalie - great point and next week in our Zoom workshop we are going to talk about how important it is to define exactly what we are talking about. We often assume that a lot of people know what we are talking about. Good researchers take their time and conceptualize and define everything - particularly things we take for granted and particularly messy social concepts. So glad you picked up on this so early! Sat, 02 Jul 2022 13:17:08 -0400 Excellent point! https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843725 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843725 This is an excellent point. Sometimes when we are taking statistics and math classes we can wonder, "why are we learning this?" Guess what?! The point that you just made is exactly why. Sat, 02 Jul 2022 13:15:40 -0400 Interesting point https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843724 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843724 Sydney, your point about summarizing without plagiarizing is a strong one. Part of what I hope will happen in this class is that you'll understand data better and the need to understand where it comes from (to go back to the original source, verify the data, etc.) so that we can better communicators about it. Sat, 02 Jul 2022 13:14:38 -0400 And... https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843723 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843723 Yes and in addition to getting people more polarized and blowing things up, the data can have real consequences for people's health, well-being, etc. Sat, 02 Jul 2022 13:12:30 -0400 Great point! https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843722 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843722 Brianna, this is such a great point. We often spend a lot of time thinking about our research question, research design, and methods and forget that the words we use to share our findings have big consequences. Sat, 02 Jul 2022 13:11:23 -0400 Healthy dose of skepticism! https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843303 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843303 I like to say that the social sciences teach us to approach everything, including data, with a healthy dose of skepticism. Thu, 30 Jun 2022 14:42:20 -0400 Yes! https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843302 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843302 Great point Brianna! We'll be talking a lot about credible sources next week as we start talking about our literature review. Thu, 30 Jun 2022 14:41:29 -0400 Context matters! https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843087 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843087 Context matters! We'll talk about that more this semester. And great connection with the inquiry journals! Wed, 29 Jun 2022 16:59:40 -0400 Love it! https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843086 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843086 Love the connection you are making with what we discussed in class! Wed, 29 Jun 2022 16:59:04 -0400 Yes, yes, YES! https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843085 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843085 Del - what a great insight. All of this talk about what can go wrong can be really depressing and make us want to give up. But like we talked about in our workshop, there are troubling things that happen when we don't use data and "check out." I hope that we'll all be inspired this semester to keep engaging in ways that are helpful. Wed, 29 Jun 2022 16:58:36 -0400 Yes! https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843084 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843084 Yes and these paragraph also reminded me of the interesting insights you all had in our workshop this week...when we were talking about how we need the media and headlines and yet the media and headlines also can cause problems. Wed, 29 Jun 2022 16:57:12 -0400 Publication Pressure https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843083 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843083 In the upcoming modules, you'll learn a little more about the pressure that researchers and publishers of journals often experience - pressure to have big headlines. For those of you who like to think about capitalism and the many critiques of it, you might find it interesting to think about how research, like pretty much everything else, is an industry where some people benefit. Wed, 29 Jun 2022 16:55:16 -0400 Credible-looking sources https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843082 https://nowcomment.com/documents/317275?scroll_to=2843082 We'll be talking a lot about credible sources next week. It's an important step in creating our own research proposal. Hopefully, we will do a better job than the folks in this article did! Wed, 29 Jun 2022 16:51:25 -0400 Great point! https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2294463 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2294463 Yuchen, I really like your point about how listening to people's personal life experiences is far more interesting than something that doesn't have meaning. As you say, these stories appeal to our emotions which make us more likely to listen and be engaged. Tue, 26 Jan 2021 18:16:41 -0500 Great way to look at it! https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2294461 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2294461 Jada, This is a great way to think about challenging one another. Good things can definitely come from asking hard questions, providing different (and sometimes unpopular!) points of view. Tue, 26 Jan 2021 18:15:04 -0500 Great points! https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2291969 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2291969 Sophie, these are great points. It can definitely be challenging when topics are important to us or have personal meaning. I am hopeful that we will do our best to focus on ideas and not people and that when we start to veer off path, we can gently remind ourselves of this important discussion guideline. Tue, 26 Jan 2021 07:54:31 -0500 Definitely! https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2291967 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2291967 Great points Jack. I'm hopeful that we can remain respectful and also find ways to convey to one another when we do feel like we aren't being heard or respected. It can be a little trickier to do in an online environment but I think we will find our way! Tue, 26 Jan 2021 07:52:56 -0500 Good points! https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2291619 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2291619 Rosie, These are some great points about the importance of not interrupting one another. As I mentioned in a few other responses, not interrupting is particularly difficult AND particularly important in an online class. I hope we will find ways as a class to make space for others so that we can all benefit. Mon, 25 Jan 2021 19:08:22 -0500 Thanks for sharing your perspective! https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2291617 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2291617 Matthew, These are all great points. I know that for many students (and instructors!) listening actively and attentively in a virtual environment can be tough. Distance, Zoom fatigue, other distractions so close by, just general life stress from the pandemic,...etc. But I do hope we will be able to find a way to listen so that we can experience the benefits you mention! Mon, 25 Jan 2021 18:47:07 -0500 Good points! https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2291568 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2291568 Alliah, These are great points, especially in an online class. Between mics being muted, how hard it is to read body language, lagging Internet, etc. all sorts of things can happen that might lead to people being cut off. Thanks for emphasizing the importance of not interrupting! Mon, 25 Jan 2021 17:59:33 -0500 Well said! https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2289818 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2289818 Andie, I love how you connected this discussion guideline with learning in our virtual world. Screens do change quite a bit, however, I hope that by following these guidelines and opening ourselves to the possibilities we will indeed be able to create some of the energy and connections that come in in person classes. I keep thinking about our conversation in class on Thursday about the pros and cons of technology. If we are able to be involved as you suggest, we might just be able to use technology for good! Mon, 25 Jan 2021 09:17:38 -0500 Love the connection to the real world! https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2288676 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2288676 Yash, great point about how listening to others is key not just in class but in the "real world." I do hope that we will practice having tough conversations that will guide us in having more productive conversations outside of class. I see our class as an opportunity to practice and exercise these important muscles! Sun, 24 Jan 2021 19:56:33 -0500 Fascinating point! https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2288666 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2288666 Macy, what a great point about tying topics to personal memories! After all, our goal is to figure out how we can use sociology in our everyday lives - tying in personal memories sounds like the perfect thing to do! Sun, 24 Jan 2021 19:54:48 -0500 Good points https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2288335 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2288335 Cade, I really like how your points tie in with our conversation in class last week. Society does seem to be a bit more polarized these days and making sure we have accurate evidence to support our claims might indeed help alleviate some of this polarization. Also, I think you raise an important point about how finding facts can actually help us not only make our own arguments stronger, but also help us examine whether there is actually any evidence to support some of the beliefs and ideas we have. We'll be talking about these types of things more in the next few weeks and I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts on this topic. Sun, 24 Jan 2021 17:00:03 -0500 Excellent points! https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2287638 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2287638 Auri, thanks so much for your great comments. You bring up some excellent points about what happens when students and instructors don't follow this guideline. I think this may be even more the case in virtual classes where it is harder to pick up on people's body language and other cues. And, for what it is worth, I find that this is often the one item on the list that folks have the hardest time following through on. I hope we'll be able to create a safe space this semester that allows people to feel comfortable sharing when something bothers or offends them. Sat, 23 Jan 2021 18:34:01 -0500 Fantastic Point! https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2287035 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2287035 Alexandra, you make some great points about why it is important to ask for clarification and also some ways we can go about asking. As you suggest in your example of connections disappearing, this tool is probably even more important in an virtual environment. Sat, 23 Jan 2021 06:14:39 -0500 Interesting! https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2286717 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2286717 Chloe, I had never really thought about this discussion point in this way - thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I love how your thoughts point to the value in everyone's perspectives and how together they can make for a much richer conversation. Fri, 22 Jan 2021 20:51:26 -0500 Good point! https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2286715 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2286715 Alex, you make some great points about how important it is to go into discussions with good intentions - focusing on learning something new or moving the conversation forward in some way. Fri, 22 Jan 2021 20:49:00 -0500 Great job https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2286410 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2286410 Brynn, nice job building off of Fiona's post and tying your comment into what we discussed in class. I do hope that we all will be introduced to ideas and perspectives different than our own. I know that I learn something new every semester from the students in this class. We may not always change our minds, but good things can come from putting ourselves in other peoples' shoes. Fri, 22 Jan 2021 16:17:32 -0500 Ad hominem https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2283820 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2283820 Oooh! A fun and insightful term to introduce to this conversation Rileigh. Your comments make me think about what we talked in class on Thursday - this idea that our failure to see others' perspectives might make us more polarized. One might also say that our tendency to attack people and not ideas could lead to polarization. What do you think? Mon, 25 Jan 2021 11:11:10 -0500 Yes! https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2282131 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2282131 Fiona, you bring up such an important point about how no-one grows when we just listen to viewpoints that are the same as ours. We'll be talking about this quite a bit in class. Sociologists have a tool called the "sociological imagination" that can help us overcome this temptation. I'm looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts about this during class. Thu, 21 Jan 2021 08:27:12 -0500 Great point Jacob! https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2282130 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247606?scroll_to=2282130 Jacob, you make some great points about the importance of listening actively and attentively. As you point out, respecting others' viewpoints and listening even when you don't agree is so important. Doing this, as I am sure you know, is sometimes easier said than done. But we will look at how some important sociological tools can help us do this - even when it is hard! Thu, 21 Jan 2021 08:24:32 -0500 Sometimes metaphors can be very helpful! https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126597 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126597 Mon, 12 Oct 2020 08:40:32 -0400 Good observation! https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126582 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126582 Mon, 12 Oct 2020 08:39:45 -0400 We will... https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126581 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126581 Sociology definitely gives us some tools to think about how white privilege is taught. For example, we might think back to our conversations about primary and secondary socialization and consider how we are socialized into racial categories. Mon, 12 Oct 2020 08:39:08 -0400 Good point https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126210 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126210 Yes, these conversations can be frustrating. I'm hopeful that we will uncover enough sociological evidence for people to see the important role that institutional racism continues to play in our society. Sun, 11 Oct 2020 20:45:26 -0400 Yes https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126207 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126207 Hopefully, by the end of the semester you will see many of the different ways that these advantages and disadvantages appear. Sun, 11 Oct 2020 20:41:14 -0400 Good point https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126206 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126206 I think this is a really interesting point. We'll talk a little about some of the reactions that people have when they hear the words "white privilege." We'll talk a little about how it is important to define it. Some of these words and phrases do lose their meaning. Sun, 11 Oct 2020 20:40:10 -0400 Yes...I am hopeful that we can avoid this in our conversations! It is a common challenge in conversations about race and many other identities. https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126205 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126205 Sun, 11 Oct 2020 20:37:21 -0400 Excellent points and examples! https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126202 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126202 Sun, 11 Oct 2020 20:33:27 -0400 Annie - good point that some of this privilege could also be seen through the lens of social class, gender, sexuality, etc. It is important to see the similarities but also to not lose sight of race by just lumping everything together. https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126201 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126201 Sun, 11 Oct 2020 20:32:51 -0400 We will definitely talk about this more...reminds me a little bit of when we talked about identity and role taking...trying to be what we think others expect us to be. https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126199 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126199 Sun, 11 Oct 2020 20:31:28 -0400 Any thoughts on why this is? What might be different if privilege was discussed in younger grades? https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126195 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126195 Sun, 11 Oct 2020 20:29:19 -0400 Ooohhh https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126098 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126098 You are asking one of my favorite questions. I think it is an important one. Hoping that we get to talk about this one a little! I would imagine that we could think about some of the things we have talked about with identity, culture and primary and secondary socialization to help us answer your question. Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:23:56 -0400 Good point - does it remind you a little of Malcolm Gladwell and Outliers? https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126097 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126097 Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:22:33 -0400 Good connection https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126096 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126096 Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:21:37 -0400 Great question https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126095 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126095 I hope we will get to talk about this one a little in class. Will be interesting to hear your thoughts and those of others. As you know, sociologists study many things. One of those things is social change and social movements. Towards the end of the semester we will talk even more about how change happens and the nature of social movements. Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:21:19 -0400 Fascinating! This is interesting to hear. We will definitely talk about both. https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126094 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126094 Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:19:57 -0400 Looking forward to talking about this topic more! I am glad that you were so intrigued that you did a little additional reading. https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126093 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126093 Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:19:20 -0400 And... https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126090 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126090 Sidney, good points. I would agree that there are some similarities and also some differences. In our class we look at them separately...it is often easier for people to get a basic understanding this way first. But most sociologists today look at the impact of race, class, gender and other important social categories together. As you might imagine, the discrimination that a Black, heterosexual woman might face could be very different than a Black, heterosexual man. Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:18:08 -0400 Good point! Sociologists are increasingly studying inequality due to physical ability. https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126089 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126089 Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:15:48 -0400 Good points https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126088 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126088 Paige, these are good points. It will be interesting to think more about whether we think the Black Lives Matter movement and other current events are bringing more attention to white privilege. The role of social media is indeed an important part of this conversation. Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:15:17 -0400 Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this in class! https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126087 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126087 Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:13:39 -0400 Yes! https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126086 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126086 Caroline, this is a great insight. Sociologists view social class and race (and gender too!) as relational. It isn't just that some people have more money than others or have a different skin color, etc. it is that having one characteristic comes at the expense of other groups. It is the relationship that is problematic. It's like there is an "in group" and an "out group." And, as we are learning, you have very little control over which one you are in. Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:12:52 -0400 Great insight https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126085 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126085 I am so glad that you picked up on this Minji. We'll talk about this a little more in class. This article isn't suggesting that some white people don't work hard or deserve success. It is, as you point out, revealing that being white provides different resources and opportunities than other racial categories. Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:10:47 -0400 Yes... https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126083 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126083 Are you starting to get a better understanding of why we started the semester reading Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell? :) Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:09:12 -0400 Good point https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126082 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126082 Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:08:04 -0400 YES!!!! https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126081 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126081 Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:07:24 -0400 I agree - it is a good analogy. White people have these things in their knapsacks that they can pull out whenever they want. And they are always with them. https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126080 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126080 Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:06:52 -0400 Excellent connection Amy! https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126079 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126079 Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:05:18 -0400 Definitely! https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126078 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126078 Sidney, this is a good point and something we will discuss in class on Monday. So often when we talk about race and racism we talk about the experiences of people who aren't white and the disadvantages they have experienced. While this is a very important aspect of the conversation, we also need to consider what role whiteness plays in this dynamic. Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:04:55 -0400 Yes... https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126077 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126077 Good point Bryce. The full article actually has MANY more and numerous other scholars and practitioners have added on to her list. Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:03:26 -0400 Good point... https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126076 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126076 Glory, this is a great connection. One interesting thing to think about is what this looks like today. As you mentioned, it definitely still occurs. It would be interesting to consider if the ways in which it happens are still the same. Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:02:40 -0400 We will talk about this... https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126075 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233799?scroll_to=2126075 Minji, this is a great point. We will actually dedicate one class period to talking about institutional racism and another to individual racism. I hope that we will have good conversations about both! Sun, 11 Oct 2020 19:01:22 -0400 Yes! https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1999438 https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1999438 Well, our work here is done - ha! My hope is that you will start to think about things a little differently. You may not change your mind, but we should always be thinking about things. Especially with all of your fantastic new sociological tools! :) Mon, 31 Aug 2020 08:20:34 -0400 Yes https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1999437 https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1999437 Yes, this could especially be the case with young people who have a history in foster care. They can be a little tired of people coming in and out of their lives. Mon, 31 Aug 2020 08:19:14 -0400 Good points https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1999436 https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1999436 These are all excellent points. I agree with you that Eby is trying to get us to think about the "so what?" I think you are on to something with your ideas about spreading awareness and being thoughtful about how we use our experiences to create positive change...looking forward to talking about this in class. Mon, 31 Aug 2020 08:18:06 -0400 Good point https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998833 https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998833 Good points Simone. I have a few short videos we will look at in class that highlight some of the points you mention about volunteer tourism. I think it will be an interesting conversation! Sun, 30 Aug 2020 21:18:09 -0400 Good point https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998832 https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998832 This is a really good point Caroline. We often only have a short amount of time to give so it is interesting to think about how we can be most helpful if that is the case. I have a hunch this will come up in our conversations this semester. Sun, 30 Aug 2020 21:16:59 -0400 Good book https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998831 https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998831 Definitely a good book to have on your list! I also would add Toxic Charities: How Churches and Charities Hurt Those They Help to your list. Lots of interesting ideas to consider in both of those books. Sun, 30 Aug 2020 21:15:58 -0400 Photos... https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998830 https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998830 Your comment made me think of a lot the selfies that people take when volunteering and then post on social media (no judgement...guilty of all of breaking all of Eby's principles at some point in my life!) I thought about this with your comment...reminds me of our conversation in class about identity. How we might use social media or other ways to make others think a certain way about us. A way that somehow gives us more status or power. Sun, 30 Aug 2020 21:12:47 -0400 Egoism https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998829 https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998829 Yes, there can definitely be a lot of egoism in service learning and similar projects. We'll probably be guilty of this at times also...but I am confident with this group that we will keep each other on track! Sun, 30 Aug 2020 21:10:47 -0400 Ugh... https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998827 https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998827 Yes, unfortunately, this is a common occurrence. We will look at a few short videos in class that make similar points. Looking forward to talking more! Sun, 30 Aug 2020 21:09:28 -0400 Well... https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998826 https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998826 I am so glad you picked up on the point that the community needs to be at the center of service projects. We have to be aware of the power dynamics that come with projects like this. I am looking forward to talking more with you and the rest of the class about what can and should volunteers get out of this. I don't think Eby says it directly but we might take some guesses. Sun, 30 Aug 2020 21:08:07 -0400 Easy to overlook https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998797 https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998797 This is such a good point! I am so guilty of doing this in past projects - both as a student and as a teacher. It is an easy trap to fall into. We won't get it perfect this semester but we will keep this insight in mind and see what we can do! Sun, 30 Aug 2020 21:05:34 -0400 Yes! https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998794 https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998794 Great point and hopefully we can see that communities usually know what they need better than anyone from the outside. Our job is to listen to what they need and use the resources we have to make it happen. Sun, 30 Aug 2020 21:03:55 -0400 Endorsement https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998793 https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998793 Sounds like a great endorsement for the reflection papers we are writing this semester Jymil! Thank you! Sun, 30 Aug 2020 21:01:48 -0400 AND https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998792 https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998792 Good point. As I have said a couple times in class, I am hoping that we can use the word "AND" a lot this semester. I hope we can find ways that we might benefit (perhaps not necessarily in ways like resume padding but in new perspectives that might change our actions going forward) AND find ways that our community partner can benefit. Looking forward to working through it in class. Sun, 30 Aug 2020 21:01:15 -0400 Great insight https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998791 https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998791 Such a great insight and an easy thing to overlook. Yes, often we want projects that fit our schedules and/or make us "feel good." I have definitely been guilty of this! We'll talk a lot about doing projects that the community needs done...and how we can cope with it when it isn't exactly what we want to be doing. Sun, 30 Aug 2020 20:59:32 -0400 Good point! https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998775 https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1998775 Your point is such an important one. LOTS of research shows how volunteers benefit - skills to put on their resume, new references and connections for jobs, improved skills, etc. Students who participate in these types of activities also tend to have higher graders and learn more. We'll definitely be talking about this topic over the course of the semester! Sun, 30 Aug 2020 20:57:15 -0400 Surprise, surprise! https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1973687 https://nowcomment.com/documents/210549?scroll_to=1973687 Okay, so maybe it is no surprise that I picked this one! But I do think that sociological principles like the ones we are covering in our class could help all service-learning, community-engagement and volunteer efforts. It is important for people to think about the difference between personal troubles and public issues in our community. This understanding will help move us from "bandaid" solutions that are temporary fixes to more lasting social change. Fri, 21 Aug 2020 17:05:03 -0400 I think this guideline is frequently overlooked and very important! https://nowcomment.com/documents/208754?scroll_to=1937482 https://nowcomment.com/documents/208754?scroll_to=1937482 Because we are often graded for speaking in class, I think it is easy to fall into the trap of feeling like we have to say something for the sake of saying something. I certainly have done this a fair share of times in classes I have been in! It's helpful to remember that the goal of the discussion isn't points but rather working together toward a deeper understanding of a topic. Sun, 26 Jul 2020 10:27:43 -0400
