The narrator in this part of the text compares the human soul to moss. At the concert, Georgiana's soul is revived even though it had been dormant for a long period of time. This is similar to how once you place moss back in water it will grow again. This means that your soul can come back alive when you're placed in the right situation/place. This creates point of view because it places an emphasis on how Clark was able to bring part of his aunt back by reminding her of her history with music. This reiterates the connection between Clark and Georgiana because this was sort of a bonding experience similar to the ones in Clark's childhood.

This sentence shows first-person point of view. This sentence shows the bond between the narrator and their aunt. It demonstrates how their aunt took on a motherly role and truly cared. This creates a deeper meaning because the reader can better understand how her past life contrasts with her current life. This point of view forms a more personal connection between the reader and the characters which creates a sense of being there and really knowing the characters.

The concert awakens a part of Georgiana that had seemed to be lost. Music made her think about her life before as a music teacher and how she enjoyed living that life. Once she moved away she had to leave that behind so it was no longer a major part of her identity. Music was no longer what her life revolved around so that part of her seemed to disappear. However, at the concert, the reader is shown that you never really lose yourself or the things that make you, you. Even if you are not in the place that makes you who you are that doesn't make it less of your identity.

As the music plays Georgina becomes emotional and is likely thinking about how she left all of this behind. This brings up a lot of emotions because deep down she still has a longing for music. The music had an effect on her brain that caused the part of her she lost to awaken. This creates the idea that music is very powerful because of the emotions it can trigger.

Locations: The City

Even though Georgiana grew up in the city she seems to not get a solid grip on her surroundings until she goes to the concert hall. However, at the concert hall, there is still a sense of estrangement because she sacrificed the sense of belonging somewhere when she left her life in the city behind. This reminds her of everything she had once had and how she is now so far from those things. This all establishes the idea that "home" is a place of comfort and leaving it can make you feel out of place.

I like the way that you mentioned the imagery of this quote. I believe it adds to the meaning of what he is saying. I think that he wanted his ideas to be achieved by his own hard work and not by the work of another man. He expresses that if you want something you should reach for it and not depend on someone else to give it to you. By sitting on someone's shoulders you are depending on them to hold you up. Thoreau was trying to show that you can't depend on someone to reach your own efforts, and you need to be able to hold yourself up. Today, people sometimes depend on other people in order to accomplish something, rather than solely completing the task. People do not always carry their own weight and put in the work. But Thoreau did not like that and valued putting in the work by himself.

best line

This is the best line in the text because it shows how Thoreau feels about the government. The way he uses expedient and inexpedient suggest that he is skeptical of the government. He says that the government is able to achieve things in certain cases but it can't do anything more. He expresses that governments are mainly not suitable and inefficient. The government appears to only be an expedient and a way to get to the end of something. It exists because people have chosen to let the government carry out their will. However, it is prone to misuse. In today's society, this still remains true and there are people in the government who abuse their power. We see police today abuse their power by using excessive force, doing warrantless searches and arrests, and assaulting citizens. All of this connects to Thoreau's ideas because police are supposed to get to the end of something but they commonly misuse this system and their power.

represents romantic ideals

This quote demonstrates the romantic ideal of individualism. Thoreau develops the idea that the individual is full of "vitality and force" through his comparison between a man and the government, which he calls a "tradition." This contrast shows that strong beliefs make an individual powerful and that the government is weakening and becoming less effective. He demonstrates that individuals possess enough power and influence to make someone do something. This shows the value of the individual and that the government is not all that powerful. And that the individual can have a large impact on the government.

I agree, by repeating the word it makes it stand out more and be very clear. It makes the tone more emotional which pulls the audience's feelings. Repetition also makes it more memorable and persuasive.

I like that you mentioned why he chose the word vanished over the word past. I think using the word vanished makes it more impactful because that means it's gone.It emphasizes that those days have disappeared and won't be coming back.

Chief Seathl uses the word perished instead of die because it emphasizes that they will pass from existence. To perish means to disappear because of your conditions. His tribe is being forced to relocate to an area that isn't completely sustainable for them. He wants the audience to know that they won't just die off but will gradually disappear due to the position they were forced into.
