He specifically addresses the people of the audience as being evil similar to the people of earlier so they don't feel safe from what he is saying.

He repeats a lot throughout his passage that he isn't trying to wrap his message in a lot of rhetorical sayings and is trying to be straightforward. The reason for this is to both keep capturing the audience's attention by being different and give an alternative to the rhetorical analysis of a speech that college students have to do after being confused from reading it.

Even though this paragraph doesn't contribute to the main message, it is still detailed to immerse the reader in the story and makes the analogy as living life as a weasel more convincing.

This whole article is based on the fact that you need to go back and reread what the author is talking about, and is repeated over and over again throughout the passage.

The point of this last part is to emphasize how sources are important for building an argument, but the argument does not come from the sources; it comes from the writer of the essay. The essay should include the writer's perspective as well.

He uses god since Christianity was highly prevalent at the time and both sides(north and south) used it as a factor in their arguments for/against slavery. His argument was that god himself was supporting the war and demanding retribution for the harsh treatment of slaves with the violence of war. Since the South is a majority Christian, this could potentially change their minds about slavery since it did not seem at the time god was supporting the south, which cold mean not supporting slavery.

Lincoln is stating that the Confederacy should really take a second thought on their succession, since they have no reason to speed it up since the Union isn't doing anything to harm them.
