Mr Harris is supposedly the author, because of the background Hankins has given and the next poem. Amenities is something pleasant. Books are always a pleasantly.

Kindness. Not everyone has air conditioning. I don't think people realize the amount they have, I type as I listen to my air conditioner blowing beside me. Just a little kindness. Compassion for the fellow human. That's what saves lives.

This reminds me of a specific poem we read a while back. "Superman and Me." The "danger" of letting people of color read. For decades, literacy tests were a requirement to vote. They did not teach victims of slavery to read. It's horrifying the amount that affects today.

This poem makes me wonder about how the author grew up. What horrors they had seen to be surprised by the black students being alive. They had not yet been hurt by the world. The world outside the ocean

This is a slap in the face for most people. People who gave so much and got nothing in return. I believe this is the tone for this piece. Anger at the way the world is and fear for how it will treat their son.

The author wants to protect their son from the reality of life. Maybe the author had a similar experience (and that's what's being referenced in line 6. Keep the childs eyes only seeing the beauty of the world.

Here it is now, the main want of the author. The fear of their son making the same life choices as them when they can see how big their son could be.

We are dividing two characters, ocean and moth. From the rest of the tone, we are seeing that moth is used as bad. Moth is the little bug flying above the big grand ocean.

We're getting a little bit of a theme in the writing here- a connection to ocean. Ocean as the escapism. Ocean is the whole world to the son.

Already some connections to the title, and some imagery. From the looks of it, this is a bunch of poems under one universal theme. From the rest of the titles, everything has something to do with morality- about life or a part of life.

I think this is one last hit at emotion. A couple lines earlier we see a conversation between students and the working title. "Much work and someday you talk pretty." Learning to talk pretty from ugly insults.

Not only do these garbled words represent the lack of understanding, but I think they can also capture some of the anxiety in the moment. While David's tone is very sarcastic, it's very descriptive of the emotions felt.

What is being said? Is it good or bad? How do I respond to this?

I really like this line, because it goes hand-in-hand with the feeling in the last paragraph. Seeing the letters but having no idea what's being said.

This also goes along with the idea of being in a foreign place. We are all human, a yet another place on earth can be the most unfamiliar.

I find it interesting that it is assumed that this is Rachels. It's like some sort of punishment. "Take this! It's yours! I've seen you wear something similar so its yours."

It is very easy to assume and just go on with your day. Assuming doesn't take up much space in the ol memory bank.

I've read this before, but I'm already picking up things that I didn't really think at the time.

For the woman to have any sort of care for this boy who tried to snatch her purse, she would have to see a person behind it. In a situation of robbery, I wouldn't necessarily be willing to take someone home to wash their face after they tried to steal my wallet.

It's a big thing to be able to see a person in the moment. To see someone in need, not just a thief.

I feel that this stanza is talking about the fear of losing safety. The fear of being seen differently because of gender or race, and that resulting in violence. The speaker acknowledges this fear though, by refusing to lose the meaning of that safety.

The Almanac Hangs

From earlier in the poem, we see that the almanac (a paper that contains meteorological data) has been a huge part of their future plans.

I think this really says something about the feelings of the characters, and how they live by the telling of the almanac. "Why am I feeling this way? I was not told I was going to." It hangs over them.

This is a hard thing to hear. There are constant thoughts and worries that bobble around in a mind. We think much that we miss what's happening currently.

I've always hated "live in the moment" quotes because I didn't fully understand it. I was living wasn't I? The people will be what you remember. We shape each other.

I definitely think we see money as such a huge luxury. It gets things that we could never think of, though. Our happiness never usually comes from those things, it comes from the connects we form around it.

I haven't been outside in a while, I couldn't really. No reason to be outside. My brother has been hit by this the most, as he is only 9.

I've tried my best to be there with him, but it's been a hard time to. I remember him coming to me this morning, jumping up and down wanting to show me the snow.

I decided to make him a snowman. Something I haven't been able to do in a long time. I think it was a good idea to take some time away from the computer and school. I'll definitely remember that smile.

I had a conversation with my therapist recently. They had told me that I was quite guarded and they asked me to find a way to feel comfortable around them. To be able to open up more.

This was quite the surprise to me, as I had always thought of myself as an open person. I add this because I think trust is something people see as dangerous. Easy to be broken.

What exactly does that say about our relationships as people? People who connect through trust.

The difference between Jack and Barry's dad.

This scene really does show the parental difference between Jack and Barry's Dad. Sure, they both love Barry, but Jack's a little different.

Even in the senate scene with Lucien, we see Jack's perspective of Lucien, (at least that's what I thought it conveyed.) which is one of admiration and pride for the struggles they go through.

Barry's dad seems to see him as some sort of Kickstarter project. He's wanting to see some sort of "achievement towards normalcy" from his son. We see later that this has been something brimming on his mind for a long time from his outburst.

They both want to see Barry flourish but I don't think his dad wants it for Barry's benefit. Jack cares out of great pride and love for seeing the boys being able to achieve their goals. I really do admire their relationship.

I think this scene also highlights jack's fears. We see a little earlier how he convinced himself that the boys already knew he was leaving. Jack even forgets about his own birthday to care for them.

He really does love them, and I think the way this situation played out was one of his biggest fears.

This shows that Barry understands there is a division between Jack with them and Jack at his other job. The others didn't seem to understand what this meant. I think this also ties into the situation with Barry's father. I feel that it has shown him a darker light of the world, and how people view others with disabilities.

One thing I find interesting about this poem is that it is simply untitled. Why is that? Was the author unable to find one that would fit or did they simply believe it didn't need one? For such a small poem, it holds a lot of power. Maybe that's why it didn't need a title to piece it together.
