Ras the narrator sees giving an impassioned speech when he first arrives in New York calls for complete and utter distrust of white culture. This underlined sentence is just a description on how the audience may deceive him. Although the last habit I have been doing a lot lately is Striving for Accuracy. The reason being is because we have been working towards sectionals and winning those games for basketball. Therefore you have to always try your best and give your best effort at all times to help improve yourself and your teammates so we can reach our end goal. Lately in practice we have been trying to perfect things and touch a few thing up. Therefore as a team we have all been Striving for Accuracy by mentally and physically preparing ourselves for big games down the road. It also talks about high standards and lately we have definitely been talking about goals and achievements we want to reach this year as a team. Such as winning conference, advancing to state, and overall playing and communicating well as a team. The last thing it talks about is checking and finding ways to improve constantly. As a induvial I always try to improve my shoot or something I might have messed up in a drill. I strive to do better if I reach failure. As a team we are the same way. For example one of my teammates could mess up and teammates on the side line will encourage her to strive to do better next time by just saying finish that or talk on defense. It is the little things that make you strive for Accuracy. Just by doing those little things it can change your perspective and work effort a lot. Fri, 29 Jan 2021 00:27:58 +0800 Description of how the habits of mind helps students https://nowcomment.com/documents/247448?scroll_to=2298933 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247448?scroll_to=2298933 Throughout this article Costa and Kallick describe in depth how essential it is that teachers are developing the learning power of students of all ages. In the article we see that both authors give a lot of concrete examples of how these learning dispositions have made a difference. These 16 habits presented to us are teaching kids, whether it is from their parents or teachers, habits that are performed by them on a day to day basis. The meaning behind this book is to help students get into the habit of behaving intelligently. A Habit of Mind is a pattern of intellectual behaviors that leads to productive actions. This is why we are trying to inform kids of these habits and consider what it means. Finding some background information online, I noticed that their are four books in the ASCD ground-breaking Habits of Mind series. The volume we are discussing today presents a compelling case for why it's more relevant than ever to align the missions of schools and classrooms to teaching students how to think and behave intelligently when they encounter problems and challenges in learning and in life. My thoughts behind the reading for the day is that all students of all ages should be learning and incorporating these 16 habits in their teachings. Fri, 29 Jan 2021 00:16:34 +0800 Mahealani Perez-Wendt https://nowcomment.com/documents/252045?scroll_to=2292208 https://nowcomment.com/documents/252045?scroll_to=2292208 Mahealani Perez-Wendt connects with "American Sunrise" because it is said that her poems are known for cultural sovereignty and offers a style that centers itself at a crossroads of struggle. This sentence I choose to compare it to suggests that they had to maintain and put a stop to their ancestors fights. They faced many struggles and crossroads while doing so, just like the Perez-Wendt's poems covered. With her poems being available to people it is showing them tough times they have faced and what might be up ahead for others to keep fighting for. It shows that life is really not all that easy for them because they are fighting their ancestors' fights. There are stories told by her from her struggles and accomplishments in her hometown. https://loc.gov/item/2020785235/ Tue, 26 Jan 2021 21:47:51 +0800 Background Information about Author https://nowcomment.com/documents/252045?scroll_to=2292206 https://nowcomment.com/documents/252045?scroll_to=2292206 Joy Harjo, was born May 9, 1951, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, U.S. She is an American poet, writer, academic, musician, and Native American activist whose poems featured Indian symbolism, imagery, history, and ideas set within a universal context. Her poetry also dealt with social and personal issues, notably feminism, and with music, particularly jazz. She is the incumbent United States Poet Laureate, the first Native American to hold that honor. She is also only the second Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to serve three terms. In my opinion Harjo is a role model to may people and has overcome many challenges. Her poems tell stories and have meaning behind them all. Tue, 26 Jan 2021 21:46:30 +0800 Differences https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284822 https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284822 Everyone is built different, has different personalities, different places in the world, no one person is the same. We can look around and see that and notice we all have our differences good and bad. We were all shaped differently. Taught different things and lessons growing up as a child. We all grew up in different households of different parts of the state, town, or community. Some were wealthy and some had to work so hard. No one person meres another person. WE ALL HAVE OUR DIFFERENCES. It is crazy to think about. How living somewhere different shapes your personality, the way you look, act, think, talk, and basically shapes everything about you. Do you think if you were raised differently or somewhere different you would be the same person? Fri, 22 Jan 2021 22:55:32 +0800 Change https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284815 https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284815 This is letting us know that we have to be willing to make changes in life and be willing to be taught new things. Change is good in life. It is good to have something new every once and awhile. To be acceptable to change. Willingness to bring in new things in life. We are all about to be brining on new things in life. Are you ready for that challenge? Are you ready for change? How do you know when you are ready?  Tue, 26 Jan 2021 13:11:05 +0800 Scary to Fail https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284792 https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284792 Holding fears back and not failing every once in awhile may tear someone down and end up resulting in something terrifying. It may break them. This is why we need to start teaching kids and people that it is fine to fail. Although you have to find your way back. You have to overcome it and seek out a solution.  Sat, 23 Jan 2021 05:40:35 +0800 Times Changing/Failure https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284791 https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284791 Times have changed since my parents were growing up. They didn't have all this technology that would communicate for them and tell them research. They had to use mail or communicate face to face. They had to use dictionaries and textbooks to figure out the knowledge they needed  at the time. The world is more complex now and filled with scary things. We were all raised by our parents and teachers that the only way to succeed is if you get the correct answer. If you don't you are automatically wrong. There needs to be room for error in life. Because once you grow up you will make mistakes constantly. Have you ever had a time where you failed? Was there anyone there to tell you that failure is ok? Tue, 26 Jan 2021 13:09:19 +0800 Response https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284786 https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284786 I would have to agree that my mom is the same exact way. She is always willing to sit there and listen to my side of the story and hear what I have to say about it. She never automatically jumps to conclusions and doesn't want to hear me out. She is always willing to discuss the situation with me and allow e to be heard. I feel like the parents of kids that don't listen are struggling to be able to talk to others now. I feel like they don't have anyone to really talk to. This is why listening to one another really helps everyone out. It is good to hear both sides of every story. Fri, 22 Jan 2021 22:55:32 +0800 Troubling Times https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284765 https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284765 No one should be alone through their adventure. They should be wanting people next to them in uncertain times. Willing to let others in and help them out. Not everyone wants to go through these things in their life alone, therefore listening to what others have to say may help you out in life. It might tell you a story that will help guide you in the right path. May help you realize what you want out of life. People are needing to express their beliefs, feelings, and thoughts to other people. Do you have someone you can share those things with? Do you listen to others? Are you willing to be there for someone who needs you the most?  Fri, 29 Jan 2021 01:19:26 +0800 Thinking as a Nation https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284760 https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284760 Throughout his text my main takeaway was that in order to hear someone out you must listen first. I think this is where we are going wrong in the world today. We are not hearing one another out and being there as a listener. We are all voicing our own opinions and they aren't being hard because no one is willing to listen. No one is willing to sit there and not speak while someone else tells the story or something important that is needed to be heard. This is where we are running into uncertainties and problems. My mom has always told me to be a good listener and that it will get me many big places in my life. She has been right so far. Just by listening it has allowed me to decide what I want to do for my career. It has allowed me to figure things out on my own and to learn new things in this world we are living in. It also allows me to hear others out when they need to be heard and engage in conversation with them. LISTEN every once in awhile. Do you think the world would be different if people just listened to one another? Sat, 23 Jan 2021 01:23:38 +0800 Response to Many Conversations/Some Purposeful https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284728 https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284728 I feel like the world we live in today many people are not sitting down and listening to one another and this is where conflict is coming into play. Conversations can be made purposeful just by having two engaging people talking about one subject. Although you have to be willing to listen every now and then. A lot of conversations go unheard because the person you are talking to is not listening and not engaged in the conversation. As mentioned as a question many go without guidance that could turn purposeful. Many conversations are mostly blabber but they would be turned into a meaningful conversation. Both people have to engage in this conversation in order for it to be invited and meaningful. Both participants or how many are engaged in the conversation have to have the willingness to sit down and listen and also be heard. Sat, 23 Jan 2021 14:51:11 +0800 Conversation https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2181706 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2181706 We notice what Reena's job is in this scene and we can take note it is similar to Jack's. We can tell Reena doesn't get wrapped up in her job, she faces the reality and hardships of it. She accepts that the foster kids probably won't stay in one place for long. She is trying to pull Jack into "real world" instances and let him know he is becoming too attached. We notice that the real world for these orphans and people with disabilities can be scary. This makes me appreciate people like Jack and Reena who have the patience and ability to take care of these people. But they have to bring them out into the "real world" and not become attached like Jack has. Thu, 05 Nov 2020 10:19:34 +0800 Schizophrenic https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2181561 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2181561 We can see a conversation back and forth between Jack and Mrs. Tracy discussing what disability Barry has and what his past history is like. I can relate this back to my weekly work when we hear Elyn Saks who also suffers from a form of schizophrenia. They both have their challenges in life. Hearing what Saks had to overcome in her life and what hardships she faced. We can only imagine what Barry is going through in this as well with his situations he was put into. The TED talk we watched in our weekly work gave me a background of what this disease is and what harm it does to someone. I can apply this to the movie and compare it with Barry's actions. Schizophrenia is a disease you may not know someone has but in this instance we can assume that Barry has something along those lines. Do you know of anyone personally that has suffered from this disease? If so share how it has affected them and you? Fri, 06 Nov 2020 02:36:31 +0800 Grocery Store Experience https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2181543 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2181543 In the film it implies that the man at the grocery store took advantage of Arnold. This makes me think back to the TED talk we analyzed about Daniel Kish. The reason being is because it would be so easy to take advantage of people that have clear disabilities at hand like Daniel Kish who suffers from being blind and having to use sonar navigation to get around. Just like Arnold in this film you can tell by the way he talks that he suffers from a disability. With both of these instances you can encourage someone like this to buy certain things that are not needed or an excess amount of certain things. Therefore you are taking advantage of people who clearly have a disability. Rather than asking and questioning what they need and how much they need. Or even helping them out with certain tasks. Would you help out a person in need who has a disability or would you be the person that takes advantage of them? Wed, 11 Nov 2020 11:06:46 +0800 Disabilities https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2181522 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2181522 Over the past two weeks we have been able to read within our weekly work people who have disabilities. Just like in this film we see these at hand. This film is relating back to our work and playing hand in hand with the experiences we have saw in text. It allows us to take note of the disability that is displayed in this film. Like Mr. Hankins said in the captioning that specific word is blurred out. But shouldn't it be called something else since people with this disability might take offense to it? Or should it be normally said since it is considered a disability? What are your opinions behind this? Thu, 05 Nov 2020 10:19:34 +0800 The Purpose https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2181520 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2181520 The purpose of this scene is it allows for a brief introduction of the main character Jack Palmer. It allows us to see into his life story and what is going on before we get deeper into the film. Fri, 03 Sep 2021 21:47:18 +0800 Response https://nowcomment.com/documents/238201?scroll_to=2174032 https://nowcomment.com/documents/238201?scroll_to=2174032 When reading through this poem and when I got down to this like I felt like it got really deep in a way. I went from rain to ants dying and then got a little deeper talking about graves and then lastly the author just brought depression into the picture. Which depression is a mental disability causing me to react and understand the poem switched directions and topics. Depression is an awful thing leading people to need medical help that is why I sought the poem to sort of change one's mentality. Fri, 30 Oct 2020 06:55:09 +0800 Response https://nowcomment.com/documents/238201?scroll_to=2174030 https://nowcomment.com/documents/238201?scroll_to=2174030 The transition is at first talking about the pain and suffering the ants are going through, which then brought a description of a grave into a picture. It is like these ants had died which then brought about the description of a grave because they had lived their life then resulting in afterlife. Fri, 30 Oct 2020 06:50:02 +0800 Response https://nowcomment.com/documents/238201?scroll_to=2174022 https://nowcomment.com/documents/238201?scroll_to=2174022 I was analyzing the same thing. It is sort of like something came up and something triggered them to remember something. When I was reading through this poem it was like the ants are the thing that brought to mind a grave, which then transitioned to the rest of the poem. Fri, 30 Oct 2020 06:46:13 +0800
